The University of Minnesota baseball team fell to the University of Milwaukee Panthers 2-1 in the afternoon mid-week match. With the loss the Gophers fall to 28-16 in the regular season conference. Milwaukee now stands at 22-19 in the season and swept its Big Ten Conference competition in Northwestern, Iowa and Minnesota.

Minnesota combined for three total hits in the game as Kurt Schlangen, Troy Larson and Mark Tatera each got a hit. Larson earned a sacrifice RBI, while Dan Olinger walked and scored the lone Gopher run.

Milwaukee got on the board in the top of the second. Will Fadness came home after he led off the inning with a single. After the bases were loaded with three-straight singles, starter Ty McDevitt got Ryan Solberg to hit into a 6-4-3 double play. It would score a run, but the Gophers got out of a jam as the Panthers only produced the one run.

Minnesota tied the game in the bottom of the frame. Olinger led off the inning with a walk and stole second. After Michael Handel walked, Mark Tatera singled to load the bases, just before Larson tied the game with the sacrifice fly.

Both teams remained tied at one until the seventh inning when Milwaukee pushed the eventual winning run across. Ryan Solberg doubled to right and moved to third on an infield grounder. In an attempt to get Solberg out at third, a Gopher throwing error scored Solberg for the winning run.

Minnesota had its chances in the bottom of the seventh when it stranded the bases loaded. The Gophers also had the winning run at third. Handel walked for his third time in the game and went to second on a sacrifice bunt. Matt Halloran pinch hit and hit it to center, which was deep enough for Handel to move to third. Milwaukee pitcher Joshua Uhen threw the ball in the dirt as it got passed catch Mitch Ghelfi. However, as Handel attempted to go home, Uhen covered home and applied the tag for the final out of the game and the win.

The Gophers utilized six pitchers in the game as McDevitt started and went for 2.0 innings. Dalton Sawyer was handed the loss, while Kevin Kray, Ben Meyer, Lance Thonvold and Billy Soule all saw action.

Minnesota is set to play again this weekend as they host the University of Nebraska Cornhuskers starting on Friday May 10 at 3:05 p.m. at Siebert Field.
