Freshman Amanda Leveille deflected 24 shots and shutout St. Cloud State to guide the University of Minnesota to a 2-0 road victory. Rachel Ramsey and Maryanne Menefee notched both of the Golden Gophers' goals in the second period.
Leveille got the starting nod for the first time since Nov. 25, and she didn't show any signs of rust. The freshman from Kingston, Canada recorded 24 saves to garner her third career win and shutout.
Minnesota (33-0-0, 27-0-0 WCHA) put 12 shots on net in the first period, but St. Cloud State's goaltender Julie Friend kept the Maroon & Gold off the scoreboard. A feat that the Huskies (9-21-3, 5-20-1 WCHA) have not accomplished in the first period of a game against since Feb. 5, 2011.
The stalemate between the two WCHA foes didn't last long in the second period as Rachel Ramsey lit the lamp at 2:09.
After grinding for the puck behind the net, junior Sarah Davis looped around to the stick side of the St. Cloud goaltender and tried to pound the puck in. Her shot attempt was blocked, but the rebound flung out to the point, where sophomore Rachel Ramsey slapped the puck just under the pipe to give the Gophers a 1-0 lead. Davis and junior Bethany Brausen were credited with the assists.
Minnesota took a 2-0 lead in the second period as freshman Maryanne Menefee chipped in a power-play goal from the just outside the crease at 12:09. She was assisted by fellow freshman Hannah Brandt and junior Kelly Terry.
The Gophers carried the two-goal lead into the intermission as they held a 27-16 shots on goal advantage.
In the third period, the Maroon & Gold again tallied double-digits shots on goal, but Friend held strong to hold the Gophers to just two goals on the night. The team finished with a 38-24 shots advantage.
Minnesota, who extended its NCAA record winning streak to 41 consecutive games, looks to garner the series sweep over St. Cloud State and become the first program in NCAA history to finish the regular season undefeated.
