Minnesota Sweeps Team Titles at Cyclone Preview

Ali Weimer won the women's 5K and Emmett Gerres was third overall on the men's side.
MINNEAPOLIS -- Both the men and women of the University of Minnesota cross country programs finished as champions of the Cyclone Preview in Ames, Iowa., at the Iowa State Cross Country Course on Friday morning. The Maroon and Gold's top individual finishers were Ali Weimer (1st, 16:15.3) and Emmett Gerres (3rd, 18:14.2).
The women's race was run at a 5000m distance with Weimer dropping a minute off of her previous 5K cross country lifetime best to win. Weimer, a Big Ten Cross Country 2024 bronze medalist, led the way for Minnesota's lineup that finished first, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth to claim the team title. The women's win with 27 points came over the likes of Missouri (34 points), Nebraska (98 points), Drake (111 points) and Iowa State (117 points). The men's championship was brought back by the leadership of captain Emmett Gerres who's third-place individual effort led the way for Minnesota to score 37 team points and hold off Missouri (40 points) and Iowa State (84 points).
Minnesota's women kicked off the delayed start of the Cyclone Preview at about 9:20 a.m. CT. While Weimer captured her sixth collegiate cross country win of her career it was the depth of Minnesota's lineup that showed on Friday with NCAA West Regional qualifiers Izzy Roemer (5th, 16:54.7), Isabelle Schmitz (7th, 16:59.3) also scoring inside Minnesota's top five. Jazleen Malherek-Osorio made a splash in her debut with a time of 16:56.9 to finish as the top freshman in the field and sixth overall while being third in Minnesota's scoring lineup. Taylor Isabel rounded out Minnesota's top five in eighth overall with a time of 17:02.5.
A team-first approach allowed the Golden Gopher men to bring the Cyclone Preview team title back to Dinkytown on Friday. Emmett Gerres' third-place finish came in a time of 18:14.2 in his 6000m debut at the collegiate level. Just behind him was 2025 Big Ten All-Freshman team member Aloysius Franzen in 18:20.5, but the next three finishers for the Maroon and Gold all came in at exactly 18:28.7. Salvador Wirth, Sam Scott and Nolan Sutter finished at the exact same time to round out Minnesota's 37 team points that helped the team win the first team event away from Minneapolis since 2023 (Badger Classic).
UP NEXT
In two weeks the Maroon and Gold will host the 40th Roy Griak Invitational on September 18-19 at the Fort Snelling Golf Course. After 39 years in Falcon Heights, the event shifts to Fort Snelling where the men will run an 8K course with the women running a 6K course on Friday with high school 5K competition slated for Saturday.
