Gerres Breaks School Record, Weimer Snags Fourth in Chicago

Minnesota's women, ranked No. 24, finished second and the men were third as a team.
MINNEAPOLIS – Minnesota's cross country team saw some of the fastest performances in program history on Friday morning at the Sean Earl Loyola Lakefront Invitational at the Sydney R. Marovitz Golf Course on Chicago's north side. Emmett Gerres broke Minnesota's 8K men's school record while women's 6K school record holder Ali Weimer posted the second fastest time of her career to finish fourth overall.
As a team the No. 24 ranked Gopher women finished second (112 points) behind only No. 20 Virginia (71 points) and ahead of No. 12 Northwestern (123 points). Weimer's 19:26.79 was good enough for fourth while Isabelle Schmitz's 19:34.66 was a lifetime best and earned her a fifth-place finish on Friday. Schmitz's performance (19:34.66) makes her the second fastest Gopher of all-time at the 6K distance in cross country, moving her past Bethany Hasz (19:36.4, 2021).
After the two top-five finishers it was the trio of Zoie Dundon, Jazleen Malherek-Osorio and Izzy Roemer who helped Minnesota to a strong second-place showing. Dundon's 20:03.36 improved on her lifetime best performance a week ago by two full seconds to finish 28th overall. Malherek-Osorio's freshman season continued its strong start with a time of 20:06.70 to snag 32nd while Roemer's 20:13.92 earned a 43rd-place finish.
To finish third as a team on Friday Minnesota's men made a strong move from the 3000m mark to the finish by moving up from eighth to third as a team over the final 5000m. Gerres' 8K school-record performance of 23:03.53 personified that team finish with a drastic move from 60th to ninth overall to lead Minnesota's lineup. Gerres' school record pushed him past Alec Basten's 23:12.3, which the former Gopher had set at the 2021 NCAA Championships during the 10K where he split 23:12.3 at the 8000m mark of the competition.
Also with a historic performance on the men's side was Aidan Jones' 23:16.77 to finish 20th overall and second among the Golden Gophers. Jones' time makes him the third-fastest Minnesota man at the 8K distance just behind Gerres and Basten. A trio of second-year Gophers rounded out Minnesota's scoring lineup on Friday. Nolan Sutter's 23:18.60 earned him 23rd overall while 2025 All-Big Ten Freshman Team member Aloysius Franzen grabbed 33rd in a time of 23:23.84. Sutter also made a significant move from 3K to 8K, going from 69th at the 3000m mark to 23rd by the finish. Sam Scott's 23:24.36 was fifth among Minnesota's lineup and saw him finish 36th in Chicago.

Minnesota's next cross country competition is scheduled to be the Nuttycombe Invitational on October 9, hosted by the University of Wisconsin at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course. The event begins at 10:30 a.m. CT and concludes around 1 p.m. CT. and is scheduled to be streamed on RunnerSpace and B1G+.
