Gophers Split Doubleheader with Ohio State to Close Series

4/5/2026 5:42:00 PM | Softball

GAME ONE

MINNEAPOLIS – The Minnesota Golden Gophers dropped the opening game of Sunday's doubleheader to Ohio State, falling 10-1 in five innings at Jane Sage Cowles Stadium.

Macy Richardson (3-9) took the loss for Minnesota, going 2.2 innings and allowing eight runs, five earned, on five hits while striking out three.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Ohio State struck early and often, plating three runs in the first inning to take control. The Buckeyes added three more in the second, capitalizing on an error and a bases-clearing triple to extend the lead to 6-0.

The Buckeyes continued their offensive surge in the third inning, launching three home runs to push the advantage to 10-0.

Minnesota broke through in the bottom of the third inning when Jae Cosgriff delivered an RBI single to score Tinley Easton and make it 10-1. However, the Gophers were unable to generate further offense as Ohio State closed out the run-rule victory.

GAME NOTES
» Jae Cosgriff drove in Minnesota's lone run.
» Tinley Easton recorded a hit and scored the Gophers' only run.
» Cassie Johnson and Jessa Snippes each added hits for Minnesota.
» Minnesota pitchers combined for four strikeouts.
» Ohio State hit three home runs in the contest.

GAME TWO

MINNEAPOLIS – The Minnesota Golden Gophers responded in the series finale, earning a 2-1 victory over Ohio State to split Sunday's doubleheader.

Sydney Schwartz (10-9) turned in a complete game in the circle, allowing just one run on four hits while striking out five to earn the win.

At the plate, Minnesota tallied 12 hits, led by Maggie Werner's four-hit performance.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Ohio State took an early 1-0 lead on a solo home run in the first inning, but Minnesota answered in the third.

The Gophers strung together a rally, highlighted by an RBI single from Jae Cosgriff. A Buckeye error allowed another run to score in the inning, giving Minnesota a 2-1 lead.

That would be all the support Schwartz needed, as she shut down Ohio State the rest of the way. The right-hander worked out of multiple jams and held the Buckeyes scoreless over the final six innings to secure the win.

GAME NOTES
» Maggie Werner went 4-for-4 to lead Minnesota at the plate.
» The Golden Gophers out-hit Ohio State 12-4.
» Jae Cosgriff drove in the game-winning run.
» Sydney Schwartz tossed a complete game, allowing just one run.
» Minnesota left 10 runners on base in the game.
