Spanier Tallies a Four Hit Afternoon in 14-2 Run Rule Victory Over Indiana

BLOOMINGTON, IND. – The University of Minnesota baseball team played out their weekend series finale against Indiana University today, taking down the Hoosiers 14-2 in eight innings on the road at Bart Kaufman Field.
Marcus Kruzan got the win for Minnesota, tossing 3.2 shutout innings and striking out three. Ben Gregory also pitched well, going three innings and striking out three.
Jack Spanier went 4-for-5 today, including a triple, a home run, and five RBIs to lead the Gophers. Ty Allen put together a standout performance at the plate as well, going 2-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs. Weber Neels also chipped in for Minnesota, putting together three hits in four trips to the plate while adding a home run and two RBIs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Gophers jumped out to an early lead in the first inning, tallying the first runs of the game on a two run home run from Weber Neels.
Minnesota picked up where they left off in the second, tallying three more runs on a three run home run over the left field wall from Ty Allen. The Gophers picked up one more run before the end of the inning on a bases loaded walk, capturing a 6-0 advantage heading into the third.
The Gophers continued to push the advantage in the third and fourth, adding two runs over the next two innings on a pair of RBI singles off the bats of Jack Spanier and Jameson Martin.
The Hoosiers got their first run on the board in the fifth on an RBI groundout before Minnesota continued to stack on the runs in the seventh inning when Spanier added a two run home run to his day, making it a 10-1 lead for the Gophers.
Minnesota added four more runs in the eighth inning to push to a double digit lead. The Gophers scored on a wild pitch before adding one run on a sacrifice fly from Sam Hunt and another two runs on a standup triple from Spanier.
Indiana picked up one run in their half of the eighth before the game came to a close, with the Gophers picking up the 14-2 mercy rule victory to close out the weekend.
