The Maroon and Gold posted 11 program top 10 performances in Tampa.
MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Minnesota track and field team posted 11 different program top 10 performances between the men and women at the USF Alumni Invitational in Tampa, Fla., at USF Track and Field Stadium. The highlight of the two-day meet came on Saturday in the men's 4x100m relay with Minnesota posting the fourth-fastest time in the world in 2026 by stopping the clock in 38.69.
The quartet of John Caleb, Wanyae Belle, Aaron Charles and Charles Godfred combined to post the No. 2 time in school history (38.69), with the only faster time at Minnesota coming back in 2025 at the NCAA Championships semifinal round (38.16). For Caleb and Belle the 4x100m relay performance was their first in a Gopher uniform, with both also securing program top 10 performances individually as well.
Caleb's weekend was filled with three different program top 10 performances, all wind-legal. Along with his winning 4x100m relay performance Caleb was the runner-up in the 100m in a lifetime best of 10.18 (+1.0 m/s). Caleb's 10.18 is the third-fastest in program history and also slots the true freshman at No. 3 in the NCAA and No. 12 in the world in 2026. In the 200m on Friday Caleb was clocked at 20.75 (+0.4 m/s) to move to No. 6 all-time at the 'U' in just his second performance in a Maroon and Gold uniform.
Belle's individual highlight came on Friday in the 200m. The British Virgin Islands national clocked a lifetime best 20.57 (-0.2 m/s) to bring home the victory over his teammates Aaron Charles (20.61) and Caleb (20.75). In his 200m debut Belle climbed up to No. 4 all-time at Minnesota and made him the fourth Gopher to go under 20.60 since 2023.
On the women's side both Kennedy Martinson and Nontokozo Ncube posted two program top 10 performances. Martinson's 58.30 in her first 400m hurdles race in college went down as No. 8 all-time at Minnesota while her 13.73 (+0.4 m/s) improved on her No. 7 all-time spot in the 100m hurdles at the 'U'. Ncube started her weekend off with a lifetime best 800m time of 2:05.63 to finish third overall in Tampa and move to No. 4 all-time at Minnesota. Then on Saturday the Zimbabwe international clocked a 53.16 in the 400m to leap up to No. 5 in Minnesota history. The 53.16 in the 400m is the fastest by a Gopher since 2023 when both Jayla Campbell and Janielle Josephs ran faster. Additionally in the 400m hurdles Kitania Headley dropped a lifetime best 58.95 to sit at No. 10 all-time in the event at Minnesota.
Two-time Big Ten long jump champion Charles Godfred secured the long jump win on Friday with a mark of 7.80m (25-7 1/4) but his performances on the track on Saturday were arguably more impressive. The Nigerian helped Minnesota's 4x100m relay to a win before he clocked a lifetime best 10.20 (+1.5 m/s) in the 100m to move to No. 4 all-time on the Gophers all-time top 10 list. In the process Godfred becomes the fifth Gopher to go 10.22 or faster since 2022.
The finale of the USF Alumni Invite saw Minnesota's 4x400m relay put forth the ninth-fastest mile relay in school history. The squad of Ahmed Khadar, Max McQuide, Dwyne Smith Jr., and Ramy Ayoub stopped the clock at 3:06.33 to finish second overall in Tampa. The 3:06.33 is the fastest 4x400m relay time at Minnesota since 2018 (3:05.78).
