Gophers Earn Shootout Win Over St. Thomas
2/7/2026 5:19:00 PM | Women's Hockey
MINNEAPOLIS – The No. 3-ranked University of Minnesota women's hockey team skated to a 1-1 tie on Saturday afternoon at Ridder Arena. Jamie Nelson scored the lone regulation goal for the Gophers, while Hannah Clark was stellar in net. Sydney Morrow found the back of the net in the shootout to secure the extra WCHA point.
After a scoreless start to the first period, Minnesota broke through on the power play with 18 seconds remaining in the frame. Off a rebound from Chloe Primerano's shot, Bella Fanale found Nelson at the right faceoff dot, where she ripped home her 10th goal of the season to give the Gophers a 1-0 lead.
The teams skated to a scoreless second period, with St. Thomas doubling Minnesota in shots on goal, 8-4. Madison Kaiser came closest to scoring for the Gophers, ringing a shot off the right post on an odd-man rush at 7:52.
The Tommies equalized at 12:10 of the third period with a tip in front of the net to send the game to overtime.
The teams played a scoreless five-minute overtime period. Nelson generated the best opportunity for Minnesota, skating past a Tommie defender and attempting to jam home the game-winner, but her bid was turned aside.
Sydney Morrow was the lone skater to score in the shootout while Clark made three stops to earn the extra conference point.
With the result, Minnesota moves to 24-5-1 overall and 18-5-1 in WCHA play, while St. Thomas moves to 12-17-1 overall and 7-16-1 in conference action.
Quotable
"A really good start," said head coach Brad Frost. "I thought [Hannah] Clark played very well. Obviously offensively we want to try and generate a little more, but overall we're proud of our team for battling, competing, gutting it out and getting that shootout win."
