Ninth Inning Rally Falls Short as Gophers Drop Game One to Kansas 8-7

MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. – The University of Minnesota opened their 2026 home schedule tonight at U.S. Bank Stadium against the University of Kansas, falling short in the ninth inning and losing to the Jayhawks 8-7.
Weber Neels went 3-for-4 at the plate, supplementing two home runs with a double while driving in four runs. Charlie Sutherland added to the night by going 2 for 4 with a home run and an RBI along with one walk. Easton Richter also helped out for the Gophers, going 1-for-4 with a home run, a walk and an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Gophers struck first in the third inning, tallying runs on back to back solo shots from Neels and Sutherland.
The Jayhawks then rallied to score five runs and take a 5-2 lead before the Gophers got back on the board in the sixth, scoring once on an RBI single off the bat of Davis Hamilton to bring the scoreline to 5-3.
Kansas built their lead to 8-3 on a three run homer in the seventh before the Minnesota offense got back to work seventh. The Gophers scored three runs on a three run home run of their own over the left field wall off the bat of Neels.
Minnesota held the Jayhawks off the board before narrowing the gap further in the ninth on a Easton Richter leadoff home run to tighten the Kansas lead. The Gophers were unable to get any closer, closing out the night 8-7.
