Minnesota took home its first road win of 2026
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The No. 15 Minnesota gymnastics team defeated the No. 16 Penn State Nittany Lions on Saturday afternoon at Rec Hall. The final score was 197.075-196.000 as Minnesota took home its first road win of the year.
Minnesota moved to 5-3 (3-2 B1G) on the year while Penn State dropped to 4-3 (3-2 B1G). The Gophers hit the 197 mark for the fourth time this season and hit a season-best with a 49.500 on balance beam.
I think the team did a really good job and we saw a lot of improvements," said head coach Jenny Hansen. "It was just fantastic the way we finished on beam. I love where our team is at right now."
The Gophers posted scores of 49.175 on vault, 49.175 on bars, 49.500 on beam and 49.225 on the floor. Penn State went 48.950 on vault, 49.375 on bars, 48.575 on beam and 49.000 on the floor.
With the 'U's beam tally, it topped the season-best by .075. Coach Hansen noted it was something she felt was coming sooner-or-later this season.
"We've talked before about how everyone in our beam lineup can go 9.900-or-higher. They almost did today and a lot of them were able to do that at the same time today."
Arianna Ostrum won the vault title with a 9.875 while PSU's Dani Latronica won on bars with a 9.925. On the balance beam, Ava Stewart won with a career-best 9.950. Minnesota's Jordyn Lyden, Lacie Saltzmann and Sophie Swartzmiller won on the floor with 9.875's.
Stewart hadn't been in the beam lineup since Jan. 2 at Utah (9.475) but delivered an elite performance today.
"Ava has been looking better and better during practice and had a nice exhibition last week. We just felt like she was back. Today she proved that and just nailed it. It was fantastic," Hansen said.
