Gophers Host Michigan State Sunday in Regular Season Finale

MINNEAPOLIS -- No. 9/14 Minnesota (10-5, 4-3 B1G) closes out the 2025-26 regular season with a home contest versus Michigan State (4-7, 1-5) Sunday at Maturi Pavilion. The dual starts at 1 p.m. with streaming on Big Ten Plus and live results on TrackWrestling.com.
Winners of three of its past four duals, Minnesota is looking to reach 11 wins in the regular season for third time in the last four seasons and fourth time overall under head coach Brandon Eggum. In addition, entering the weekend with a 4-3 conference record, Minnesota is looking to finish above .500 in the Big Ten for the fourth straight season and seventh time overall under Eggum.

As noted above, the Golden Gophers enter the weekend ranked ninth in InterMat's dual team rankings, slipping from the No. 7 spot it had held since Nov. 25. The team is also down one spot to 14th in InterMat's tournament rankings and down three spots in the NWCA Coaches Poll from No. 6 to No. 9.
Nine Gophers are ranked in at least two of the major polls (InterMat, Flo, Win and OpenMat) with six appearing in all four.
All-American redshirt sophomore Max McEnelly is the No. 4-ranked wrestler at 184 pounds in all four polls.

NATIONAL STAT LEADERS
Through last weekend's competition, the eight major decision victories for Vance VomBaur (141) were tied with five others for the most in the country. Meanwhile, Clayton Whiting (174) and Koy Hopke (285) both had six major decision wins to tie for the 11th most in the country.
Max McEnelly (184) is tied for fifth in the nation with nine tech fall wins this season.
Heavyweight Bennett Tabor is tied for 14th in the country with six wins by fall this year.

FACING MICHIGAN STATE
Sunday will be the 60th all-time meeting between Minnesota and Michigan State. The Spartans will become the ninth program that the Gophers have faced at least 60 times.
The Golden Gophers lead the series 36-23, including 13 straight wins, which is Minnesota's longest active win streak against a Big Ten school and the second longest overall behind a 21-match streak over North Dakota State. During the 13-match streak, which dates to Feb. 19, 2006, the Gophers have outscored the Spartans, 373-103, resulting in average final score of 29-8.
In Minneapolis, Minnesota leads the series 17-11, including six consecutive wins dating to Michigan State's last win in the series on Jan. 28, 2005. The six-match win streak is the Gophers' second longest active home win streak behind only a seven-match streak against Purdue.
Minnesota has not hosted Michigan State since Jan. 15, 2023. That's currently its third-longest drought for hosting a Big Ten school. The only other longer absences are against Penn State (last in Minneapolis on Feb. 9, 2020) and Indiana (Feb. 17, 2019).

The dual kicked off at 125 pounds, where Patrick McKee knocked off No. 25 Tristan Lujan by 5-1 decision. McKee tallied the opening takedown in the match, then clinched the match with a reversal in the third period. Aaron Nagao followed with a 9-4 victory over 11th-ranked Rayvon Foley. Nagao dominated on the feet with four takedowns and rode Foley for over two minutes.
Jake Bergeland kept the Gophers rolling with a 3-2 decision over Jordan Hamdan, as his second-period takedown proved to be the difference-maker. Michael Blockhus followed with a decision victory in an 8-2 match over Peyton Omania, tallying three takedowns in the match.
On the other side of the break, Michigan State won its first two matches of the night at 157 and 165, but Bailee O'Reilly got the Gophers back on track with a 10-6 win over Ceasar Garza. O'Reilly secured a third-period reversal to put the match away.
Isaiah Salazar defeated No. 17 Layne Malczewski by a score of 5-3. Salazar secured the opening takedown of the match, then got a reversal in the second period to put him out front early. Malczewski looked to battle back in a takedown late, but Salazar was able to scramble enough to let the clock run out and earn himself the win.
After a Spartan win at 197, Minnesota's final win of the night came at heavyweight as Garrett Joles earned the winning takedown with thirty seconds left to defeat Ryan Vasbinder by a score of 4-3.
