Vega Returns to Gophers as Assistant Coach

MINNEAPOLIS – Former Minnesota All-American Leroy Vega is returning to his alma mater as the team's newest assistant coach, Gophers head coach Brandon Eggum announced Wednesday.
"Having an alum return to the program with the passion and connection Leroy has for Minnesota is incredibly special," Eggum said. "We are extremely excited to welcome Leroy back to Minnesota Wrestling. He is a tremendous recruiter, motivator, relationship builder and developer of men.
"His experience leading as a head assistant coach in the Big Ten has prepared him to make an immediate impact. Leroy understands what it means to be a Gopher, and he has a genuine passion for helping young men grow on and off the mat. We're excited to have him back home and believe he will be a tremendous addition to our staff and our program."
Vega comes back to the Gophers after seven years with Purdue. He was elevated to the role of head assistant coach in June 2024 following five years of service with the Purdue wrestling program. Prior to his stint as the head assistant coach, Vega was an assistant coach during the 2023-24 season, a player development associate in 2022-23 and a volunteer assistant coach from 2019-22.
With the Boilermakers, Vega oversaw the development of two national runners-up, 10 All-Americans, 41 NCAA qualifiers and 34 Big Ten placewinners. Among his pupils, Verga helped develop Matt Ramos into Purdue's first two-time All-American since 2006.
"Coming back to the University of Minnesota means more to me than I can put into words," Vega said. "Minnesota helped shape me into the wrestler, coach and person I am today. Having the opportunity to return to my alma mater and give back to a program that has given me so much is incredibly special.
"I'm excited to get to work, help develop these young men on and off the mat, and continue the proud tradition of Gopher Wrestling. I'm also looking forward to seeing all the familiar faces in the stands; the fans and supporters I grew to know and love during my years wrestling here who are still showing up and supporting this program today. Vega joined the Purdue staff after eight years as head coach at his alma mater, Portage High School, in northwest Indiana. During his span at the helm, Vega had 41 Indiana High School Athletic Association state tournament qualifiers, with 10 appearing in the finals and three Portage wrestlers claiming an individual title. In 2015, the Indiana High School Wrestling Coaches Association named Vega its coach of the year.
Prior to his head coaching appointment at Portage, Vega was named the inaugural head coach at Calumet College of St. Joseph in Whiting, Ind., with the birth of the program in 2008. He was at the helm through the 2009-10 season before returning to his roots in Portage.
Vega wrestled collegiately at Minnesota from 1999 to 2002 and was teammates with both Eggum and head assistant coach Luke Becker during his time in the Maroon and Gold.
Individually, Vega earned All-America honors three times at 125 pounds, placing fifth in 1999 and 2000 and third in 2001. He captured the Big Ten Conference 125-pound title in 2002, and his performances helped the Gophers win three Big Ten team titles (2001-03) and back-to-back NCAA team titles in 2001 and 2002.
Vega tallied a career record of 135-26, with his 135 wins still ranking fifth all-time at Minnesota and his .839 winning percentage ranking 18th. He owned a career dual record of 65-14, with the 65 wins tied for seventh on the Gophers' individual dual wins list.
As a prep at Portage, Vega was a two-time state champion in 1996 and 1997. His success translated on the international scene as well. In 1998, Vega placed ninth at 60 kg at the UWW Junior Greco-Roman World Championships. The following year, competing at 54 kg in freestyle, he placed seventh at the world championships.
Vega earned his Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education and teaching from Minnesota in 2002. He and his wife, Sarah, have two daughters, LillyAnna and Lilah, and a son, Lydon.
