He's the first Gopher to be named Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week three times in one season

MINNEAPOLIS – For the second week in a row and third time overall this season, Minnesota fifth-year kicker Luke Drzewiecki has been named the Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday.

Drzewiecki becomes the first player in team history to be Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week three times in a season, and he matched Darius Taylor (2023) and Shannon Brooks (2015) for most weekly honors overall in a season.

Sharing the honors with Indiana's Patty McAteer, Drzewiecki went 3-for-3 on field goals Saturday against the Hoosiers, making his first from 37 yards, adding a 51-yarder in the fourth quarter and then a 60-yarder with 19 seconds remaining in regulation.

His 60-yard make was the second longest in school history and the longest ever made outdoors by a Gopher. Drzewiecki also became the third Gopher in program history to make three 50-yarders in one season along with Adam Bailey (1997) and Dragan Kesich (2023), and he's the sixth to have three or more 50-yarders in a career.

Drzewiecki also joins Bailey (Penn State in 1997) and Emmit Carpenter (Purdue in 2016 and Fresno State in 2018) as the only Gophers to make multiple 50-yarders in the same game.

Drzewiecki has made 26 straight field goals dating to last season, the longest active streak in the nation (next closest is 22). He's made all 15 of his attempts this year, which leads the country for most makes without a miss. His streak of 15 straight makes for the Gophers is the second longest in program history and one off the school record of 16 set by Dan Nystrom in 2002.

Drzewiecki has made a field goal in 17 straight games and two field goals in eight straight contests.

Included in his performance this season, Drzewiecki is 8-of-8 from 40 yards or longer, including 3-of-3 from 50. He's also 14-of-14 on extra points for a team-high 59 points.

It's the third honor of the season for Drzewiecki from the Big Ten, as he was also named Special Teams Player of the Week on Sept. 28 after making a pair of field goals in a 27-24 win at Washington and last week for his heroics against Iowa, including a walk-off winner.

In addition, Drzewiecki's three Special Teams Player of the Week honors ties him with Kesich, Carpenter and Bailey for the most in a Gopher career, and he's tied for fourth overall in program annals for conference weekly honors.
