DULUTH, Minn. – The No. 2-ranked University of Minnesota women's hockey team completed a series sweep of Minnesota Duluth with a 3-2 victory Saturday afternoon at Amsoil Arena. Sloane Hartmetz scored the first goal of her collegiate career, including the game-winner, to seal the win for the Gophers.

After an even opening 15 minutes, the Gophers broke through at the 15:39 mark. Maddie McCullough received a stretch pass from Kendra Distad at the blue line, skated through the high slot and fired a wrist shot far side against the grain to give Minnesota a 1-0 lead.

The Bulldogs responded just over a minute later to even the score at 1-1. The 'U' continued to battle, as Sienna D'Alessandro tucked home a loose rebound just outside the crease 55 seconds later to give the Gophers a 2-1 lead heading into the first intermission.

Hartmetz netted her first career goal 16:39 into the second period. Skating in off the rush, Bella Fanale dropped a pass back to Hartmetz in the slot, where she fired a shot five-hole to lift the Gophers to a 3-1 lead after two periods of play.

The Bulldogs cut the deficit to one with a slap shot from the right point through net-front traffic at 6:56 of the final period.

The teams skated to a scoreless remainder of the contest, as Minnesota held on for the 3-2 victory and completed the series sweep.

With the win, Minnesota improves to 9-1-0 overall and 5-1-0 in WCHA play. UMD falls to 6-4-0 overall and 3-3-0 in conference action.

Quotable
"A way better hockey game on both sides — faster, more physical, and more plays were being made," said head coach Greg "Boom" May. "They're a tough team to beat, especially to beat them twice on the road. Overall, just proud of our group for persevering after they scored early enough in the third period to make us think about our game a little bit. We stuck with it and found a way to get the job done."
