DULUTH, Minn. – The No. 2-ranked University of Minnesota women's hockey team skated to a 3-2 overtime victory over No. 12/13 Minnesota Duluth on Friday night at Amsoil Arena. Ava Lindsay found the back of the net with 36.9 seconds remaining in overtime to secure the extra point for the Gophers.
Bella Fanale opened the scoring early for Minnesota, netting the game's first goal at the 2:59 mark of the first period. Skating in on a two-on-two rush, Fanale fired a shot high to the far side from the left faceoff dot to make it 1-0.
Fanale doubled the lead at 10:19, tallying her second goal of the opening frame. Skating in off the rush and fending off a Bulldog backchecker, Fanale went forehand, backhand, before returning to her forehand to extend the Gopher lead to 2-0.
Minnesota killed off two UMD power plays in the opening period to carry its two-goal advantage into the first intermission.
The Bulldogs responded early in the second period, scoring a power-play goal at 4:04 after a fortunate bounce left a UMD skater alone in the slot to cut the deficit to 2-1.
The Gophers weathered a late third-period push from the Bulldogs, including a key penalty kill, but UMD pulled its goaltender and found the equalizer with 34.5 seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime.
In the extra period, Adrianna Milani found Lindsay skating alone into the slot. Lindsay fired a glove-side shot high past the UMD goaltender with 36.9 seconds remaining to seal the 3-2 overtime victory for Minnesota.
With the win, Minnesota improves to 8-1-0 overall and 4-1-0 in WCHA play. UMD falls to 6-3-0 overall and 3-2-0 in conference action.
Quotable
"We knew it was going to be hard," said head coach Greg "Boom" May. "We told our team before the game to expect it to be hard. We told them to expect an empty net at the end of the game, one way or the other, and that's what we saw there. I didn't really love the way we played, to be honest with you. The last 15 or 16 minutes of the third period, I actually did like us. I thought it was a very methodical period. We got pucks behind their defense, had numbers back and didn't give up any odd-man rushes. Unfortunately, in the goalie-pull situation, we got stuck out on the ice, couldn't get a puck over the blue line and they tied it up. I give our team a lot of credit. We could've felt bad for ourselves, but we didn't. We dug in there, had a great overtime and finished it off."
