Minnesota Gets 79-47 Victory Against Northwestern

MINNEAPOLIS - The University of Minnesota women's basketball team (11-4, 2-2 Big Ten) got a 28-point performance from the bench on the way to a 79-47 victory over the Northwestern Wildcats (6-10, 0-5 Big Ten) at home Thursday.
The Golden Gophers had three players score in double figures, led by Tori McKinney, who had 20 points, six rebounds and two steals. Sophie Hart added 10 points and Brylee Glenn chipped in as well with 10 points and four steals from the bench.
Minnesota collected 47 rebounds in Thursday's game compared to Northwestern's 27, led by eight boards from Finau Tonga. The Gophers also put in work on the offensive glass, turning 15 rebounds into 15 second chance points.
Minnesota forced 16 Northwestern turnovers while committing 12 themselves in Thursday's game. The Gophers turned those takeaways into 23 points on the offensive end of the floor. Glenn's four steals led the way for Minnesota.
How It Happened
After playing to a 7-7 tie early in the game, Minnesota went on a 7-0 run with 5:13 left in the first quarter to take a 14-7 lead. The Gophers then added five points to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with a 23-11 advantage. Minnesota did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 14 of its 23 points close to the basket.
Minnesota kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 23-0 run starting at the 8:28 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Amaya Battle, to increase its lead to 46-15. The Wildcats cut into that lead, but the Gophers still enjoyed a 48-18 advantage heading into halftime. Minnesota dominated in the paint, scoring 16 of its 25 points close to the basket.
Following intermission, Minnesota continued to expand its advantage, pushing it to 57-25 before going on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Hart, to expand its lead further to 63-25 with 1:57 to go in the third. The Gophers held onto that lead for the rest of the frame and entered the fourth quarter with a 65-27 edge. Minnesota turned four offensive rebounds into five second chance points on the way to scoring 17 total points in the quarter.
Minnesota kept its lead intact before going on a 6-0 run, finished off by Niamya Holloway's jumper, to grow the lead to 72-39 with 4:08 to go in the contest. The Wildcats narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Golden Gophers still cruised the rest of the way for the 79-47 win. Minnesota got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring 14 of its 14 total points.
