Minnesota held USF to under .000 hitting

MINNEAPOLIS -- The No. 13 Minnesota volleyball swept the South Florida Bulls on Friday night at Maturi Pavilion. The Gophers took the match 25-13, 25-13, 25-19.

Julia Hanson led Minnesota with seven kills while Stella Swenson had 28 assists and seven digs. Calissa Minatee led the defense with seven blocks while Lauren Crowl had six.

The Gophers (6-1, 0-0 Big Ten) outhit the Bulls (2-4, 0-0 AAC) .338 to -.250, tallying 32 kills to USF's 21. The 'U' had 11 blocks while the Bulls had four. The two teams tied with 31 digs.



Minnesota held an opponent to under .000 hitting for the first time this season. The last time they held an opponent to negative hitting was Sept. 2023 against Michigan.

Arianna Beckham and Addy Brus led South Florida with five kills.

How It Happened
SET 1 | Minnesota started hot, scoing four straight on a pair of kills by Acevedo and ace from Hanson. After a pair of USF points, the Gophers scored five of the next seven, taking a 9-4 lead. The Bulls would get it as close as three at 9-6 before kills from Myers and Crowl combined with an ace from Hanson made it 13-7, Minnesota. USF took its first timeout of the frame. A pair of blocks and kills got the Bulls within three once again at 15-12 before an ace and kill from Acevedo made it 18-12, forcing another timeout from the visitors. The 'U' cruised to the finish line, taking the first frame 25-13. Minnesota ended the frame on a 9-1 run. The Gophers hit .280, holding USF to just -.069.

SET 2 | The two teams exchanged points for the first 12 before kills from Hanson, Acevedo and Myers put the 'U' up 10-6, forcing a USF timeout. An ace from Hanson and a kill and a block from Myers put Minnesota up 13-6, keeping going a 7-0 and causing USF's second timeout of the frame. The Gophers would score six of the next seven, getting three aces from Georgia Lee in the process, to complete a 13-1 run and go up 19-7. USF would get no closer than nine the rest of the way as the 'U' took the set, 25-13.

SET 3 | Minnesota started hot again in set three, scoring six of the first seven before a USF timeout. Crowl and Minatee combined on a pair of stuffs. USF scored a trio of points before the Gophers got four straight, getting kills from Swenson, Hanson and Myers. After they led 12-4, USF called another timeout. The Bulls made a push, scoring seven of the next 11 to cut the lead to 16-11, forcing a Minnesota timeout. The 'U' would expand its lead back out to 10 at 23-13 before a 5-0 Bulls run made it 23-18. The Gophers would eventually close it out, 25-19.

Game Notes
» Friday's match was the sixth ever between Minnesota and USF. Minnesota is 6-0 all-time in the series.
» The Gophers (11) had 10-or-more blocks for the third consecutive match. They held USF to -.025, the lowest total of the year and the first time a team hit negative against Minnesota this season.
» A season-high nine different Gophers tallied kills.
» >Stella Swenson posted 28 assists, a match-high.
» Lauren Crowl had a career-high six blocks. She also had a season-best five blocks.
» Calissa Minatee tallied a season-best seven blocks.
» McKenna Garr had 11 digs, her fourth match of the season and third straight with 10+ digs.
» Georgia Lee had a season-best three aces, her third straight match with multiple aces.
» Julia Hanson had seven kills to lead Minnesota. Her streak of 21 consecutive matches with 10+ kills came to an end.
