No. 13 'U' Dusts Off Brooms with Sweep of Dayton

Minnesota is 2-0 on the weekend and 7-1 on the year
MINNEAPOLIS -- The No. 13 Minnesota volleyball took down the Dayton Fliers on Saturday night at Maturi Pavilion. The Gophers took the match 25-22, 25-21, 25-22.
Julia Hanson led Minnesota with 11 kills and nine digs while Kelly Kinney had 12 kills and Alex Acevedo went for 11. Stella Swenson posted 36 assists.
The Gophers (7-1, 0-0 Big Ten) outhit the Fliers (3-4, 0-0 A10) .305 to .167, tallying 50 kills to UD's 34. The 'U' had seven blocks while the Fliers had four. Minnesota had 49 digs to UD's 42.
Kamryn Hunt led Dayton with 14 kills while Panna Ratkai had eight kills and 11 digs.
How It Happened
SET 1 | Dayton came out strong, scoring six of the first nine.The Gophers would tie it at 7-7 after kills from Kinney and Acevedo combined with a solo block from Swenson and ace from Hanson. The two teams would exchange points all the way up to 15-14, where UD took a 15-14 lead into the media timeout. After the break, a 4-1 Gophers run forced a Fliers timeout. Swenson had a pair of kills while Acevedo had one in the spurt. Dayton responded with a 3-1 run of their own to cut the lead to 20-19, forcing a Minnesota timeout. The 'U' kept Dayton at bay, finishing the frame 25-22. Minnesota had 16 kills, led by Acevedo with 10.
SET 2 | UD again started strong, tallying seven of the first 11 points. A 3-0 spurt by Minnesota tied it up at seven after kills by Myers, Hanson and Acevedo. Dayton would push back ahead with a 5-3 advantage before Minnesota scored five of the next six to go into the media timeout with a 15-13 lead. Hanson had two kills in the spurt while Myers had one. UD would cut it to one point twice before a 4-1 'U' spurt paced by kills frrom Kinney and Acevedo made it 20-16, leading to a timeout from the visiting team. The two teams exchanged the next four points before Dayton called its final timeout trailing 22-18. Minnesota went up 23-18 before three straight from the Fliers forced the home team into a timeout. A kill from Kinney and an ace from Thibault after the break closed out the set with a 25-21 score.

Minnesota went back up 18-16 before a UD block and ace made it 19-18, Fliers. The Gophers would take their first timeout of the set. Minnesota would score four of the next five to go up 22-20, capping off the spurt with an ace from Swenson. Dayton called a timeout after that to talk it over. The Gophers would close it out by scoring three of the final five points to win, 25-22, taking the sweep.
