Minnesota earns its first win of the season
ST. PAUL, Minn. - The University of Minnesota women's soccer team (1-1-0, 0-0-0 Big Ten) defeated St. Thomas (1-1-0, 0-0-0 Summit League) 3-0 on Sunday evening in front of 794 fans at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium.
The Golden Gophers were led by Paige Kalal, who scored a career-high two goals. Davy Mokelke added her first career goal. Goalkeeper Sarah Martin earned the shutout win, grabbing five saves.
As a team, Minnesota led in shots (32-7) and shots on goal (17-5).
Despite a scoreless first half, the Gophers outshot the Tommies 20-4, including seven shots on target.
Kalal's first goal came in the 71st minute after receiving a pass near midfield from Sawyer Danielson. Kalal broke through the St. Thomas backline and scored from inside the 18-yard box.
Mokelke doubled the lead in the 77th minute. Kalal dribbled down the right sideline and sent a cross into the 6-yard box. A St. Thomas defender deflected the ball, and Mokelke was there to capitalize.
