Minnesota Travels to West Lafayette to Take on Purdue

MINNEAPOLIS, MN --The 'U' returns to the road this weekend. They will travel to West Lafayette, Indiana to take on the Purdue Boilermakers. The Gophers will take on the Boilermaker 3 times April 4-6 in this Big Ten weekend series matchup. The Maroon and Gold will play these games in the eastern time zone for their last games outside of the central time zone for the year until the B1G conference tournament, which is also being held in West Lafayette in May. Minnesota takes on Purdue Friday night beginning at 4pm CT, Saturday at 1pm CT, and finishing up Sunday at 12pm CT.Â

Purdue
The Gophers continue their 51st season of competition against Purdue. The Boilermaker are 18-16 on the year and come into the matchup with the 'U' ranked #64 in the NCAA RPI rankings. Purdue comes into the matchup with Minnesota on a 1 game win streak after they took down #20 Nebraska 6-2 in Lincoln. The Boilermakers are 3-7 in conference play and are 3-1 overall at home so far this season. They are 13-6 in neutral site contests and 2-9 in true away games. The Gophers and Boilermakers have faced a number of similar opponents during non-conference play and to begin B1G play. Both teams had tough schedules to begin the season. Purdue matched up with #4 Texas A&M twice to begin the season while the Gophers took on #7 Tennessee, #19 Duke, and #5 LSU early in the season. Each team competed at the Joan Joyce Classic in Boca Raton, FL hosted by Florida Atlantic University. At this tournament both teams took on NC State, Villanove, and Louisville. Minnesota went 1-3 in those games while Purdue went 3-1. In conference play, both teams have taken on #20 Nebraska. Purdue went 1-2 while Minnesota went 0-3 against the Cornhuskers. Both Purdue and Minnesota played games at Devon Park in Oklahoma City, OK. That is the home of the Women's College World Series. Minnesota went 2-2 in OKC as they took on Penn State and Michigan State. The Boilermakers were in Oklahoma City a week later than the Gophers. They also went 2-2 during their weekend having taken on Wisconsin and Maryland.
History
The Gophers and Boilermakers will meet again this weekend for the first time since 2021. The 'U' hosted Purdue in a 4-game series at Jane Sage Cowles Stadium in 2021. The Gophers went 3-1 that weekend with the most recent win being a 2-1 victory on April 4. This series dates back to 1978 when Minnesota won 9-6. Minnesota has a 38-19 all-time record against Purdue with the largest margin of victory being a 12-2 win in 2017. The Gophers are 9-1 in their last 10 matchups with Purdue. Minnesota is 18-11 at home and 17-7 on the road against the Boilermakers. The 'U' is 37-18 in B1G play against Purdue. Minnesota won 17 straight games against the Boilermakers spanning from May 2015 through April 2021. During that streak the Gophers shutout Purdue six times and won by run rule three times in those 17 games.Â

Sydney Schwartz was a standout performer in the circle for the Gophers this past weekend against Northwestern. Schwartz made two appearances in three games. She went 0-1 with one start. Sydney pitched 9.0 innings over her two appearances. She threw a complete game in Game 1 of the series only giving up 2 unearned runs. She posted a 0.00 ERA with six strikeouts and an opponent batting average of .235. Kayla Chavez, Margaret Tobias, and Taylor Krapf led the Gophers at the plate. Chavez hit .286 over three games with two hits. She totaled two RBI, two total bases, and two walks. She slugged .286 and had an on-base% of .444. Chavez also stood out in the field with a 1.000 fielding% with three putouts and three assists. Tobias also hit .286 with two hits over three games. She totaled two total bases, one run scored, and three walks. She slugged .286 and had an on-base% of .500. Krapf had another solid weekend for the Gophers as well. She hit .222 with two hits. She had three total bases with one double, one RBI, and one run scored. She slugged .333 and an on-base% of .300. Taylor also was a standout behind the plate with 15 putouts, two assists, and a 1.000 fielding%.Â
