The Nigerian won the pro section of the men's long jump on Saturday.
MINNEAPOLIS – Led by defending Big Ten long jump champion Charles Godfred's win in the long jump, the University of Minnesota track and field program brought back four wins from the 115th Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa. In total, between the Drake Relays and the Gary Wilson Invitational, which was held in Minneapolis, the Maroon and Gold posted five program top 10 performances from Wednesday and Saturday.Â
Godfred's long jump win came in the 'World Athletics Continental Tour' section of the Drake Relays on Saturday. Godfred, who ranks 39th in the latest long jump IAAF World Rankings, claimed the win over five other long jumpers who rank inside the top 86 in the world with Cameron Crump being the highest ranked jumper at No. 32. Godfred leaped beyond eight meters twice during the competition, winning with his third attempt of 8.13m (26-8 1/4 | +3.5 m/s). Godfred's best non-wind aided leap was his 8.03m (26-4 1/4 | +1.8 m/s) which came on attempt two.Â
Godfred's wind-aided leap puts him at the No. 2 spot in the NCAA this season and the No. 1 spot in the Big Ten less than a month until he defends his crown in Eugene, Ore., at the 2025 Big Ten Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Lastly, Godfred's winning mark broke a 64-year-old Drake Relays long jump record that was held by three-time Olympic medalist Ralph Boston in 1961.Â
The first top 10 performance of the weekend came at the Gary Wilson Invitational on Wednesday, April 23. Spencer Brown's 110m hurdles time of 13.65 (+1.7 m/s) came in the final of the meet after dropping a 13.86 in the prelims. Brown's time puts him at the No. 2 spot in school history, up from his number three spot he previously held. For Brown his new lifetime-best time in the 110m hurdles is the 30th-fastest in the NCAA this season, fourth in the Big Ten and No. 2 all-time by a Croatian.
Also at the Gary Wilson Invitational was a lifetime best from graduate student Lexy Berger. At sunset Berger cleared 4.29m (14-1) in her final home meet at the University of Minnesota Track and Field Stadium. Her new lifetime best was just one centimeter better than her previous lifetime best that she set at the 2022 Big Ten Outdoor Championships that were also held in Minneapolis.Â
At the Drake Relays both Erin Reidy and Zoie Dundon posted top 10 times in the 1500m. In the same heat, Reidy finished second overall in a time of 4:14.31 while Dundon came across the line at 4:18.54. Reidy's time improved on her No. 2 spot in school history while Dundon moves to No. 8 all-time in the 1500m.Â
Hadley Streit was the final Gopher at the Drake Relays to post a program top 10 mark. The Golden Gopher posted a lifetime best 64.95m (213-1) on her final attempt of the competition to finish second overall and move from No. 6 all-time at the 'U' to No. 5, passing Nayoka Clunis. Streit finished as the meet's runner-up to teammate Anthonett Nabwe, who put forth her third-straight performance beyond 67 meters with a winning throw of 67.14m (220-3).Â
The Greek duo of Angelos Mantzouranis and Kostas Zaltos had a quality weekend in the circle with Mantzouranis winning the Gary Wilson Invitational while Zaltos finished ahead of his fellow Greek in Des Moines. In Minneapolis, Mantzouranis' final throw of 75.33m (247-1) was good enough for the victory. At the Drake Relays Zaltos' 76.26m (250-2) helped him finish as the meet's runner-up in the 'World Athletics Continental Tour' section while Mantzouranis finished in third with a toss of 75.71m (248-4).Â
Other stand-out performances during the weekend included: Anthonett Nabwe (Gary Wilson Invite Hammer Throw - 67.03m | 219-11), Jak Urlacher (Drake Relays Pole Vault - 5.47m | 17-11 1/4), Jordan Dunigan (Drake Relays Discus - 54.19m | 177-9), Isaiah Schafer (Drake Relays Shot Put - 19.18m | 62-11 1/4), Nyalaam Jok (Gary Wilson Invite High Jump - 1.77m | 5-9 3/4)Â and Ella Weippert (Drake Relays Javelin - 43.96m | 144-3).Â
Next week Minnesota competes in a pair of road track meets. The first will be in St. Paul, Minn., at the Hamline Meet of the UnSaintly on April 30. Then the Maroon and Gold will travel to Baton Rouge, La., for the LSU Invitational on May 3 at Bernie Moore Track Stadium.Â
