EVANSTON, Ill. – Four Minnesota wrestlers advanced to Saturday night's semifinals following Session I of the Big Ten Wrestling Championships inside Welsh-Ryan Arena.

Gable Steveson, Max McEnelly, Tommy Askey and Vance VomBaur all moved one way away from the championship bout thanks to undefeated performances in the morning session. With 41.0 team points, the Golden Gophers are in fifth place behind Penn State (88.0), Nebraska (63.0), Illinois (58.5) and Iowa (54.0).

The top-seed at heavyweight, Gable Steveson returned to the Big Ten Championships for the first time since 2022 but picked up right where he left off as he won his 10th straight match at Big Tens and 64th overall in a row. After a first-round bye, he dominated Maryland's No. 9 Seth Nevills, 21-5, at the 4:58 mark. Steveson is 12-0 this year with a 100 percent bonus rate. Steveson now meets No. 4 Nick Feldman of Ohio State in the semis.

Making his championships debut, McEnelly, the No. 2 seed at 184, picked up his team-leading 12th tech fall win of the year with a 22-6 victory at the 6:48 mark over Rutgers' No. 7 Shane Cartagena-Walsh. McEnelly had two takedowns in each of the first two periods and three more in the third to go to 19-0 on the year and 34-0 in his career. He's earned a matchup with No. 6 Edmond Ruth of Illinois in the semifinals.

Askey went 2-0 to earn his semifinals spot against No. 8 Brandon Cannon of Ohio State. The No. 5 seed at 157 pounds, Askey majored Indiana's Ryan Garvick, 14-3, then met No. 4 Jacori Teemer of Iowa. The pair closed out the regular season with Teemer winning 4-1, but Askey got his revenge with a 4-1 sudden victory win Saturday. Tied at 1-1 in the closing seconds of the first overtime, Askey got in on a double and dropped Teemer before covering for the winning takedown.

The fourth seed at 141 pounds, VomBaur reached the semifinals for the first time in his career. He opened with a 12-2 major decision over Wisconsin's 13th-seeded Brock Bobzien then knocked off No. 5 Sergio Lemley of Michigan in sudden victory. Tied at 1-1 in overtime, VomBaur got in on Lemley's left leg, brought him into waterfall position and then flipped him over for the winning takedown.

Minnesota's six other wrestlers are all still alive in the consolation bracket.

No. 5 Andrew Sparks opened with an 18-1 tech fall win at 5:50 over No. 12 Alex Uryniak of Maryland, but was pinned by Michigan's fourth-seeded Beau Mantanona at 1:29.

The No. 4 seed at 197 pounds, Isaiah Salazar rallied for an 8-6 win over No. 13 PJ Casale of Rutgers but was stopped in the quarterfinals by Illinois' No. 5 Zac Braunagel, 10-4.

Clayton Whiting went 2-1 to keep his tournament going at 174 pounds. The No. 5 seed, Whiting was upset by No. 12 Branson John, 5-2, but followed with a 4-2 victory over No. 13 Ceasar Garza of Michigan State.

No. 9 Cooper Flynn began his day with a 17-0 tech fall loss to No. 8 Nicolar Rivera of Wisconsin at the 6:45 mark in a 125-pound matchup.

At 133 pounds, No. 10 Tyler Wells fell in overtime to No. 7 Zan Fugitt of Wisconsin, 4-1, while fellow No. 10 seed Drew Roberts was defeated by Northwestern's No. 7 Sam Cartella, 4-3.

Session II starts with the consolations Saturday at 5 p.m. on B1G+, while the semifinals get underway at 7 p.m. on Big Ten Network.
