MINNEAPOLIS -- The University of Minnesota women's track & field team is in Indianapolis, Ind., this weekend for the 2025 Big Ten Indoor Championships, held at the Indiana State Fairgrounds at the Indiana Farm Bureau Fall Creek Pavilion from Feb. 28-March 1.
ABOUT THE 2025 BIG TEN INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIP
The 2025 Big Ten Indoor Track & Field Championships will be spread out over two days with both days being streamed on B1G+ with field events and track events both having their own dedicated streams. Minnesota's first competitors will start at 9:10 a.m. CT on Friday with the women's pentathlon 60m hurdles. Day one concludes at 7:45 p.m. CT with Saturday's action for Minnesota slated to begin at 10:10 a.m. CT. Live results will be available throughout the event via PT Timing.
NABWE LOOKING TO GO BACK-TO-BACK
Anthonett Nabwe, a now four-time Big Ten Field Athlete of the Week honoree, seeks to defend her 2024 Big Ten weight throw title on Friday. Nabwe won the title last season as a redshirt freshman, the first freshman to win the event since 2011. With a victory in Indianapolis, Nabwe would be just the fifth back-to-back conference champion in the women's weight throw since 1999.
While capturing her Big Ten title in 2024, Nabwe also set an NCAA freshman record in the weight throw with her mark of 23.36m (76-7 3/4). Nabwe's winning mark at the 2024 Big Ten Championships remained her lifetime best in the event until just last weekend at the Snowshoe Open when the Liberia native threw a new NCAA No. 1 throw of 23.56m (77-3 3/4). Nabwe's current mark of 23.56m (77-3) sits at 18th all-time in NCAA indoor women's weight throw history.
IN THE RANKINGS
Minnesota currently stands at the No. 32 spot overall in the nation and seventh among Big Ten programs in the latest USTFCCCA women's rankings.
The latest Event Squad rankings also dropped this week with the women's weight throw the top Gopher group at No. 3 overall with an average throw of 20.65m (67-9). Minnesota's 60m hurdles crew was the second highest at the No. 6 spot while the 5000m (No. 9) and high jump (No. 15) groups all sit inside the top 20.
MINNESOTA AT THE BIG TEN INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Maroon and Gold have won six Big Ten indoor titles in program history with the last coming in 2022, in Geneva, Ohio. All six of Minnesota's indoor titles have come under the guidance of head coach Matt Bingle, with his first coming back in 2007, his first year as at the helm of the indoor track and field program.
Minnesota has won four 'Athlete of the Championships' awards with Amira Young being the only two-time winner while Shelby Frank (2023) and Heather Dorniden (2009) also receiving the honor for the Gophers. 2024 B1G INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS REWIND
Last year the Golden Gopher women's track & field team finished fourth out of 13 teams with 72 points at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.
Capped off by the 4x400m relay, the Gophers earned two event titles during the two-day meet with the quartet of Jayla Campbell, Janielle Josephs, Dyandra Gray and Abigail Schaaffe joining Annie Nabwe (weight throw) as Big Ten champions. The mile relay team clocked a 3:33.83, the second fastest time in school history, to claim the crown for the third time in the last four indoor Big Ten Conference meets. For Schaaffe, the 2024 indoor title was the seventh of her career between indoor and outdoor, which is a school record for a career.
BROWN WINS CROATIAN INDOOR NATIONAL TITLE
University of Minnesota graduate student Spencer Brown won his first Croatian national title on Feb. 23, capturing the 60m hurdles championship on Sunday in Zagreb, Croatia. Additionally, the Maroon and Gold had a trio of participants at the USATF Indoor Championships at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island, N.Y.
