Well-Balanced Attack Upsets No. 22 Indiana

12/3/2025 9:25:00 PM | Men's Basketball

Cade Tyson and Langston Reynolds each scored 17 points, Isaac Asuma added 15 points and all five Gophers starters reached double-figures, as shorthanded Minnesota (5-4, 1-0 Big Ten) stunned No. 22/19 Indiana (7-1, 0-1 B1G) with a 73-64 upset win in the Big Ten opener at Williams Arena.

Minnesota, which continued to play without a pair of injured starters in forward Robert Vaihola and guard Chansey Willis Jr. (out for the season), gave first-year head coach Niko Medved a memorable victory in his first-ever conference game. The five Gophers starters combined to play 180 of 200 minutes. The win was Minnesota's first in a conference-opener since an 89-67 win versus Rutgers on Dec. 3, 2017. The Gophers' win, their first against Indiana since 2019, snapped a nine-game losing streak versus the Hoosiers, which had included three-straight losses at Williams Arena.

Reynolds, starting his second-straight game in place of Willis Jr., was 7-of-11 from the field and 3-of-4 at the line, while adding five rebounds, four assists, and a steal. Tyson, who has scored in double-figures all nine games this season, was 5-of 10 from the field, including 2-of-4 from beyond the arc, and 5-of-6 at the line. He grabbed a team-leading and season-high eight rebounds to go with three assists and a steal in 40 minutes. Asuma's 15-point night included going 6-of-9 at the line, grabbing seven boards, tying Reynolds with a team-best four assists, coming up with two steals, and blocking a shot. In his first start, Bobby Durkin finished with 12 points, four rebounds, and a pair of assists. Durkin was 3-of-6 from long-range and 3-of-3 at the line. Jaylen Crocker-Johnson also reached double-figures with 11 points, including two three-pointers, while adding seven rebounds, three blocks, two assists, and a steal.

As a team, Minnesota made 23-of-47 (.489) field goals, including 8-of-21 three-pointers, and 19-of-27 (.704) foul shots. The Gophers held a decisive 40-25 advantage in rebounds, which included 10 offensive boards and outscored the Hoosiers 14-7 in second-chance points and 30-26 in the paint. Minnesota's defense held an Indiana team that had scored 100 or more three times, and 85 or more in six of its seven games, to a season-low 64 points. The Hoosiers were 22-of-55 (.400) from the field, including 8-of-27 (.296) from behind the arc, and just 12-of-20 (.600) at the line. Tayton Conerway led IU with 18 points, while Lamar Wilkerson had 15 points, and Sam Alexis added 10. Leading scorer Tucker DeVries, who entered the game averaging 17.9 points per game, was limited to nine points.

Grayson Grove, Nehemiah Turner, and Kai Shinholster came off the bench for the Gophers. Grove had two rebounds, two blocks, and a point in eight minutes, Turner added two rebounds and a block in seven minutes, and Shinholster had a rebound, an assist, and a steal in six minutes.

Minnesota led 7-6 early, keyed by a three-pointer by Crocker-Johnson. The Hoosiers, who made their first five field goals, responded with a 6-0 run to pull ahead 12-7 with 15:50 left in the half, but Tyson converted layups on back-to-back possessions to cut it to a one-point game. Minnesota retook the lead on a pair of layups by Reynolds, making it an 8-0 run and a 15-12 lead with 12:44 left.

The Hoosiers ended a three-and-a-half minute scoring drought with a layup from Alexis at the 12:11 mark, but Tyson added another layup for a 17-14 lead. DeVries made a three-pointer during a 5-0 Hoosiers run to give Indiana a two-point lead, but Asuma scored on a layup to tie the score with 9:09 left. Conerway and DeVries each knocked down their second trey of the half and Alexis added a layup to put IU up 27-19, but a Reynolds three-point play snapped a scoreless streak of 4:36 and cut it to 27-22 with 4:33 left.

The Gophers pulled closer, as Grove made 1-of-2 at the line and Tyson grabbed the rebound on the second shot and found Durkin open for a three-pointer to cut it to 29-26 with 3:06 remaining. Single free throws from Durkin and Asuma pulled the Gophers within one point with 1:40 left. Indiana extended the lead to 33-30, but Tyson hit a three from in front of the IU bench with 0:11 left to make it a tie game at the half.

Tyson and Reynolds each had nine first-half points to lead the Gophers, while Asuma added seven. Minnesota made 13-of-27 (.481) field goals, 3-of-12 three-pointers, and 4-of-9 free throws. The Gophers held a 17-12 edge in rebounding, including eight offensive boards and a 14-5 advantage in second-chance points. The Gophers were 10-of-15 inside the arc and had a 20-14 lead in points in the paint.

Durkin gave Minnesota an early lead in the second half, as he drained a three from the top of the key for a 36-34 edge. The Hoosiers went 1-of-4 at the free throw line to trim it a 36-35, but Reynolds scored on a layup with 17:15 left to make it 38-35. A 4-0 Hoosiers run put the visitors back in front by a point, but Reynolds connected on two free throws for a 40-39 lead. Alexis scored twice to put the Hoosiers up 43-40, but Asuma and Tyson each drilled three-pointers to give Minnesota a 46-43 lead with 11:43 left, and Tyson added a pair of free throws for a five-point lead with 10:49 on the clock.

After Indiana cut it to 48-45, Reynolds scored in the lane and Crocker-Johnson connected on his second three-pointer of the game to stretch the lead to 53-45 and force Darian DeVries to call timeout with 9:23 left. The Hoosiers responded with a pair of three-pointers to trim Minnesota's lead to 53-51, and head coach Niko Medved called a timeout with 7:47 left. Minnesota responded with a 9-2 run, including five points from Crocker-Johnson, extending its advantage to 62-53 with 5:20 remaining.

Conerway scored to pull the Hoosiers within seven, but Durkin connected on a trifecta to give the Gophers a 65-55 lead and send the Williams Arena crowd into a frenzy. IU answered with a 7-0 run, pulling the Hoosiers within three points with 1:56 left, but Tyson made a free throw with 1:41 left to snap a 2:27 scoreless streak. Asuma added a free throw and Durkin went 2-of-2 with 46.4 seconds left to extend the lead to 69-62. A pair of Conerway free throws trimmed the lead to 69-64 with 42.3 seconds left, but Asuma answered with a pair of makes with 0:34 left. DeVries misfired on a three, and Asuma added two more at the line to seal the upset.

Minnesota travels to West Lafayette, Ind., to face No. 1/1 Purdue on Wednesday, Dec. 10. Tipoff at Mackey Arena is set for 6:00 p.m. CST, and the game will be televised on Big Ten Network.
