Four Gophers Score in Double Digits En Route to 82-62 Win

10/25/2025 2:44:00 PM | Men's Basketball

Cade Tyson once again scored a game-high 26 points, and Langston Reynolds (17), Chansey Willis Jr. (12) and Jaylen Crocker-Johnson (10) reached double-figures, as Minnesota defeated North Dakota, 82-62, in its final exhibition game before a crowd of 7,512 at Williams Arena.

Tyson, who had 28 points in Minnesota's 80-54 exhibition win against North Dakota State, finished the game 9-of-13 from the field, including 4-of-6 from beyond the three-point arc, and was 4-of-5 at the line. The North Carolina transfer added four rebounds, two assists, and a steal in 29 minutes. Reynolds came off the bench for his 17 points and was a perfect 6-of-6 from the field and 5-of-5 at the line. He also had four rebounds, four assists, and two steals for the Gophers. Willis Jr. finished with 12 points, a game-high eight assists, six rebounds, and a pair of steals. Crocker-Johnson reached double-figures for the second-straight time with his 10 points, and Robert Vaihola had a team-high seven rebounds to go with six points.

The Gophers shot 59.2 percent (29-of-49) from the field, including 6-of-15 (.400) from long-range, and were a solid 18-of-23 (.783) at the free throw line. Minnesota held a 31-25 edge in rebounding, and had 20 assists on 29 made field goals. North Dakota was led by Garrett Anderson's 14 points, while Greyson Uelmen added 13. The Fighting Hawks made 21-of-53 (.396) field goals, including just 7-of-26 (.269) three-pointers, and 13-of-20 (.650) free throws.

Minnesota trailed 12-9 early, but a 14-2 run over a seven-minute span put the Gophers up 23-14. Tyson had five points during the stretch, and Vaihola added four. Tyson's second three-pointer of the half extended Minnesota's lead to 28-16 with 5:03 left in the half, and the advantage grew to 37-21 following a trey by Bobby Durkin and layups from Vaihola and Reynolds. Tyson's three-point play, as he was fouled on a fastbreak dunk, closed out the first-half scoring for Minnesota, which led 40-29 at the break.

Tyson had 14 points at the half, making 5-of-6 field goals, including 2-of-3 attempts from behind the three-point line. Reynolds came off the bench for seven points, Willis Jr. had six points, five assists, and four rebounds, and Vaihola added six points and four boards. As a team, Minnesota was 14-of-25 (.560) from the field, including 3-of-7 (.429) from long-range, and 9-of-10 at the line. Anderson and Uelmen each had seven points for UND, which held a 15-11 rebounding advantage.

The Fighting Hawks opened the second half with a three to briefly trim Minnesota's lead to single-digits, but a 6-0 Gophers run including a layup from Tyson and a pair of layups by Crocker-Johnson made it 46-32. A three-point play by Willis Jr., and a layup from Reynolds extended the lead to 51-35, and a dunk and a trifecta by Tyson put the Gophers up by 19 and forced a UND timeout with 13:12remaining. The quick five points for Tyson put him over 20 points for the second straight game. A 6-2 UND run trimmed the lead to 61-46, but Crocker-Johnson made a pair of free throws and Asuma drained a three to quickly push Minnesota's lead to 66-46 with 8:54 left. Tyson's fourth three-pointer of the afternoon made it 73-49, and a 6-0 run with four points from Reynolds pushed the lead to 79-54 with 5:20 remaining. UND outscored Minnesota 8-3 the rest of the way, but the Gophers had the game in hand.

Minnesota opens the regular season with a 7:00 p.m. tipoff versus Gardner-Webb on Monday, Nov. 3.
