No. 18 'U' Wins at Washington in Cook's Return

The Gophers took the match in four sets
SEATTLE, Wash. -- The No. 18 Minnesota volleyball team emerged victoriously in coach Cook's return to Seattle on Saturday night in a four set win over the Washington Huskies. The set scores were 14-25, 25-17, 25-20, 25-12.
"I liked the response after the first set, Washington came out strong and knocked us on our heels a little bit," said head coach Keegan Cook. "I loved our response on a tough back-to-back weekend."
Julia Hanson led Minnesota with 15 kills while Lourdes Myers had season-bests with 12 kills and nine blocks. Carly Gilk had 11 kills on .550 while Stella Swenson went for 31 assists and 11 digs.
The Gophers (15-4, 5-3 Big Ten) outhit the Huskies (9-9, 4-4 Big Ten) .266 to .242 but trailed in kills (51 to 47) and digs (53 to 52). Minnesota had more aces (6 to 4) and blocks (12 to 7).
Simona Mateska went for 16 kills and 10 digs while Kierstyn Barton went for 15 kills and 10 digs.
How It Happened
SET 1 | Washington started out hot, scoring five of the first six before Minnesota called timeout. Carly Gilk tallied a kill out of the break before UW went on to score eight of the next nine to go up 13-3, forcing coach Cook to call his final timeout of the frame. Kills from Myers and Hanson made it 13-5 before the Huskies scored five of the next six to go up 18-6. UW would go up by as many as 14 at 22-8 before three points in-a-row by Minnesota. The Huskies took set one, 25-14. The Huskies ended the set with 20 kills compared to eight for the 'U'.
SET 2 | Minnesota started much better in set two as the teams split the first eight points. After UW went up 6-4 with a pair of kills, Minnesota scored three straight, getting a pair of blocks from Crowl and Taylor. Kills from Kinney and Gilk helped the Gophers take a 10-8 advantage. UW would tie it up at 10 before kills from Myers and Gilk put the 'U' up 13-10, forcing a timeout from the home team. Two UW errors combined with a kill from Hanson and a block from Hanson and Myers capped off a 7-0 run to make it 17-10, Minnesota. The Gophers would go up 20-12 after two more kills from Hanson and Myers before UW called its second timeout of the set. The Huskies would get as close as 21-15 before the Gophers closed it out, 25-17, getting a pair of kills from Gilk and one from Taylor.
SET 3 | Set three was back and forth once again, with neither team leading by more than one point through the first 14. The Gophers then scored three of the next four to go up 10-8. UW got a pair of kills to make it 11-10 before a pair of errors and a Kinney kill made it 14-10, Minnesota. The Huskies got back within one after three straight kills before Kinney tallied another kill to make it 15-13 heading into the media timeout. The Huskies would tie it up at 15 before Minnesota scored five of the next seven to take a 20-17 lead, forcing a UW timeout. The Huskies got back within one at 20-19 before a pair of errors made it 22-19, Minnesota. The Gophers would take a timeout leading 23-20 after a Hanson kill. Minnesota would eventually close out the third, 25-20, to go up two sets to one.
