MINNEAPOLIS -- Four pitchers combined to toss the Gophers first shutout of the season on Wednesday as Minnesota blanked the St. Thomas Tommies 8-0.
Sam Kennedy started on the mound for Minnesota (18-18), going four shutout innings while giving up three hits, walking one, and striking out four. Justin Thorsteinson came in for two scoreless innings, allowing two hits and a walk before Caden Capomaccio came in and mirrored Thorsteinson's outing. Freshman Tyler Hemmesch finished the game with an immaculate inning, striking out all three batters he faced in the ninth on nine straight pitches.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Golden Gophers took the lead in the first when Ike Mezzenga left the yard with Weber Neels aboard and never looked back.
The 'U' tacked on runs in the next four more innings, with their biggest output coming in the second when they scored three times. Two of those three runs scored on a two-run single off the bat of junior Brady Counsell.
