MINNEAPOLIS -- Minnesota baseball dropped a 12-6 defeat to South Dakota State on Tuesday afternoon at Siebert Field.
The Jackrabbits scored eight of their 12 runs in the top of the third inning to break the game open. Minnesota would cut it to five at 11-6 in the eighth inning but would get no closer.
Gophers starter Jack Liffrig (1-3) left after just 2.1 innings after giving up seven hits and seven earned runs. A five-run top of the third proved to be his undoing as the Jackrabbits (16-17, 7-5 Summit) scored runs off an RBI single and a grand slam. SDSU would add three more in the frame off relievers Sam Malec and Trent Schoeberl to take a 10-0 lead.
Minnesota (11-27, 2-10 Big Ten) was paced offensively by Brett Bateman, who went 2-for-3 with a career-best three RBI. Redshirt junior catcher Riley Swenson also went 2-for-4 in his season debut.
SDSU scored its first two runs in the top of the first off a sacrifice fly followed by an RBI double by Gene Hackman.
The Gophers threatened in the bottom of the second, loading the bases with one out. Freshman shortstop Jake Larson grounded into a 5-3 double play to end the inning and the home team was held scoreless.
The Jackrabbits plated eight runs on seven hits in the top of the third. The first two hitters reached on singles before the third was hit by a pitch. After an RBI single by Nic Nelson plated one, a grand slam by Drew Beazley broke the game open and put the visitors up 7-0, chasing Liffrig from the game. Freshman right-hander Sam Malec entered for Minnesota and gave up two hits and three earned runs in a third of an inning before leaving. SDSU led 10-0 after three.
Minnesota broke through with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Brady Counsell reached on an error to start the inning. After Kyle Bork struck out, Riley Swenson delivered his first hit of the season, a line shot to left field for a single. Ronald Sweeny then doubled to deep left center, scoring Counsell from second. With two outs in the inning, Brett Bateman singled to left, scoring a pair of runs to get the home team back within seven at 10-3.
SDSU added one more in the top of the sixth on an RBI single from right fielder Henry George. The Gophers answered with two in the bottom of the frame to cut the deficit to six at 11-5. Swenson singled to start the frame and advanced to third on a pickoff attempt by SDSU's catcher that sailed down the first base line. He came in to score on an RBI single from Noah Berghammer. After advancing to second on a wild pitch, Berghammer scored on an RBI single up the middle from Bateman.
The Gophers threatened again in the bottom of the eighth. Minnesota drew four walks in a span of five batters to plate their sixth run of the afternoon. They had the bases loaded with one out, but Jack Kelly struck out and Brady Counsell grounded out to second to end the inning.
The Jacks would add one more in the top of the ninth to make it 12-6, which would be the final.
SDSU tallied 13 hits compared to nine for the 'U'. The visitors drew 10 walks and had four batters get hit by pitches. Minnesota drew seven walks and had two hit-batsmen.
