After wrapping up play at the 2020 CambriaCollegeClassic this past weekend, the Gopher Baseball team is back at it with a pair of midweek contests against two border rivals. Minnesota is set to take on North Dakota State (March 3) and South Dakota State (March 4) this Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively.

Tuesday's battle with North Dakota State represents the first of two installments in 2020 between the two teams, with Minnesota set to take on the Bison again on April 8. As for SDSU, Wednesday's match-up will be the second of three meetings between the Gophers and Jackrabbits in 2020. Minnesota holds an all-time record of 94-36 (.723) against Summit League opponents.

Last Time Out
While hosting the CambriaCollegeClassic from Feb. 28 to March 1, the Gophers welcomed the likes of Atlantic Coast Conference foes North Carolina, No. 14 Duke and No. 13 NC State to U.S. Bank Stadium in addition to Purdue and Iowa of the Big Ten Conference. Over the course of the event, Minnesota went head-to-head with each ACC team in attendance, finishing with a 1-2 record once it was all said and done. Despite the bottom-line results, the Maroon and Gold played well at the tournament, delivering competitive performances against three highly-touted ACC programs.

Opening the Classic with a signature victory, the Gophers took down North Carolina on Friday night, 4-1. Max Meyer was magnificent, tossing a complete game win for Minnesota with just one run allowed on five hits while striking out a career-high 14 batters. Although Minnesota dropped the next two games to Duke and NC State, they either held the lead or found themselves knotted in a tie in the eighth inning or later in both match-ups. Minnesota tied the game at 3-3 against Duke in the eighth inning on Saturday, thanks to clutch solo home runs from Jack Wassel and Easton Bertrand. The Gophers would ultimately lose the game in extra innings, 7-3. In the loss to NC State the very next day, Minnesota led as late as the eighth inning, but were ultimately unable to hold off the No. 13-ranked Wolfpack, 11-7

Weekly Honors
On the heels of his performance against North Carolina, Meyer was named the Big Ten Conference Pitcher of the Week on March 2. The accolade represents Meyer's second career Pitcher of the Week award and the third total Big Ten weekly honor of his career. Furthermore, Meyer hauled in CambriaCollegeClassic Tournament MVP honors this past Sunday, in addition to being named to the All-Tournament team as a starting pitcher. Fellow Gophers Zack Raabe (.583/.543/.833) and Wassel (.538/.571/.923) were also named to the All-Tournament Team at second base and third base, respectively.

History With NDSU
Minnesota enters Tuesday's midweek contest with North Dakota State holding an all-time record of 35-9 against their border rival. Gopher fans are likely to remember the Maroon and Gold's most recent victory over the Bison, as it came via a 4-3 walk-off victory off the bat of Meyer on April 9 of last season. Batting in the bottom of the ninth inning and down 3-2, Meyer launched a two-run walk-off homer over the outfield wall to give the Gophers the victory. Following the 2019 contest, Minnesota is riding a four-game winning streak against NDSU.

History With SDSU
The Gophers own an all-time record of 37-12 against the Jackrabbits, having just defeated South Dakota State on Wednesday of last week, 4-2. In the process of increasing their winning streak against SDSU to seven consecutive games, freshman Trent Schoeberl recorded his first career victory on the mound. Schoeberl fired 5 1/3 innings of two-run (zero earned) ball in the game, giving up three hits and five walks to go along with five strikeouts. The freshman set career highs in both innings pitched and strikeouts in the milestone outing.

Season Snapshot
Heading into the midweek, Minnesota possesses a 5-6 overall record in 2020. The Gophers have yet to play a true road contest, but are 2-2 on neutral turf and 3-4 at home thus far. Minnesota currently has victories against Oregon, Arizona, South Dakota State, No. 22 TCU and North Carolina this season. As of Feb. 25, Minnesota sits at No. 22 in the nation in terms of RPI.

National Leaders
Through the first three weeks of the campaign, the Gophers boast a handful of recognition across the NCAA leaderboards. Meyer has the 11th most strikeouts in the NCAA with 31, while also being 49th in the country with a 14.2 K/9. As a pitching staff, Minnesota ranks 12th in the country with a 12.0 K/9. Additionally, fellow junior Bertrand finds himself in the NCAA top-25 in three different categories with 0.44 home runs per game (21st), four home runs (22nd) and an .833 slugging percentage (23rd).

Up Next
Minnesota hosts Utah this upcoming weekend (March 6-8) in a three game series at U.S. Bank Stadium.
