Schoeberl, Thoresen Register Career Firsts as Gophers Top Jackrabbits

2/26/2020 11:43:00 PM | Baseball

MINNEAPOLIS – The Gopher Baseball team secured a victory in their first midweek game of 2020, topping the Jackrabbits of South Dakota State, 4-2.

Minnesota pitching ruled the contest on Wednesday night, as Trent Schoeberl, Ryan Duffy and Sam Thoresen combined to complete the game without allowing an earned run.

Schoeberl was the true highlight for the Maroon & Gold, earning the first win of his collegiate career while tossing 5 1/3 innings with two runs (zero earned) on three hits and five walks. The freshman struck out five batters en route to the milestone victory and has now begun his college career with 8 1/3 innings without allowing an earned run.

Although offense was at a premium on Wednesday, the Gophers received a trio of RBI doubles from Jordan Kozicky and Zack Raabe. After falling behind 2-0 in the first inning, Kozicky put the U on the board with a second inning double down the left field line that scored Easton Bertrand.

Still down 2-1 in the bottom of the second, the scoring would be all Raabe from that point forward. The sophomore drove a two-out Jackrabbit offering to the right-center field wall in the second, bringing two runs in to score for Minnesota.

With a 3-2 lead in hand, there would be no looking back for Minnesota. Schoeberl cruised into the sixth inning before being relieved by Duffy, who subsequently fired 1 2/3 frames of scoreless ball with four punchouts.

Raabe would later pad the Gopher lead to 4-2 with another RBI double off the right-center field wall in the eighth. With the late-inning hit, Raabe tied his career highs in both doubles (two) and RBI (three).

Possessing a tight advantage, Minnesota turned to Thoresen to close down the game. The righty fireballer entered in the eighth and hurled two no-hit innings to record the first save of his college career. The junior finished with four walks and three strikeouts over his two innings on the mound.

While Schoeberl earned the win in the contest, SDSU starter Riley McSherry was saddled with the loss. McSherry lasted just 1 2/3 innings, giving up three earned runs on four hits and one walk.

Quotable
"I liked what I saw on the mound. We walked more than we would've liked to, but I did see guys being more aggressive and attacking the strike zone. I liked the presence out there on the mound from all three of the guys that went out there for us tonight," said head coach John Anderson "It's a long season. We've got a long way to go and once again, the competition provides us with more information that we'll use to try to get better.

"It's good for the team to start to get going here. We need to pick up a couple of these wins, especially midweeks so we can have a good attitude going into the weekend," said Schoeberl. "It's pretty cool to get [my first win] in the first opportunity, but it's just good to get out there and compete."

Notable
Schoeberl earned the first win of his college career against SDSU, while Thoresen registered his first career save.

Raabe drove in three of Minnesota's four runs in the game, tying career highs in both doubles (two) and RBI (three).
