MINNEAPOLIS (GopherSports.com) - Senior captain Justin Kloos has been tabbed the NCAA Third Star of the Week and the Big Ten First Star of the Week for the Gopher Hockey program while sophomore Tyler Sheehy has been named the Big Ten Third Star of the Week following Minnesota's conference sweep at Michigan State over the weekend.
Behind a pair of 4-2 wins in East Lansing, the Maroon & Gold picked up its first sweep of the season and its first sweep at Michigan State since 1978.
A native of Lakeville, Minn., Kloos led the Big Ten with five points (one goal, four assists) over the weekend behind a pair of multi-point games. The forward tallied a goal and two assists in Friday's series opener before adding a pair of assists in Saturday's finale. Kloos leads all active Big Ten skaters and ranks third among active NCAA skaters with 125 points (52 goals, 73 assists) in 133 career games at Minnesota.
This is the fifth career Big Ten weekly honor for Kloos and the first of the season.
A native of Burnsville, Minn., Sheehy added three points (two goals, one assist) in this weekend's sweep and now leads the Gophers with 23 points and 11 goals this season. The sophomore score a goal and added an assist in Friday's opener before adding an empty-net goal on Saturday to move his point streak to eight games and his goal streak to five games - both stretches are career longs for Sheehy. The sophomore forward ranks second in the Big Ten in scoring this year.
This is the fourth career Big Ten weekly honor, the third of the season and the second-consecutive accolade for Sheehy.
Minnesota returns to action with the 26th annual Mariucci Classic, Dec. 30-31, with the Gophers hosting Mercyhurst, Alabama Huntsville and Massachusetts. Tickets for the 2016-17 season are available at MyGopherSports.com or by calling 1-800-U-Gopher.
