Moore nets lone goal for 'U' in B1G opener
MINNEAPOLIS - Javon Moore scored the only goal of the night for the No. 18 Minnesota men's hockey team in a 1-1 tie against Penn State Friday night from 3M Arena at Mariucci in the Big Ten Conference opener for both teams.
The Golden Gophers (2-3-2 overall, 0-0-1 B1G, 1 point) got a 28-save performance for goaltender Luca Di Pasquo to remain unbeaten over their last four outings, while the Nittany Lions (2-4-1 overall, 0-0-1 B1G, 2 points) won the shootout for an extra point in the league standings.
The teams skated up and down the ice sheet for nearly two and a half minutes before the first stoppage in play. Minnesota got caught with a slow change and PSU generated a 2-on-1 rush that Pasquo shut down on a pad save. A shot block from Finn Loftus in the defensive zone allowed the Maroon and Gold to get on the attack where Christian Humphreys pushed the puck towards the net. Moore used his athleticism to chip the puck back to himself before lifting it over the goalie's pad for the opening tally at 7:33.
With just five seconds remaining in the first period, the Gophers drew the first penalty of the night and could not take advantage on the fresh ice surface beginning the middle stanza as the power play expired. After continuing to control play for the next five minutes, Minnesota went back to another man advantage that was again shut down by the visitors. Following the extended zone time, a pass through the slot from LJ Mooney to Evan Murr gave the senior a quality chance that sailed just over the crossbar from the right circle before Jacob Kvasnicka was stopped at the doorstep.
The Maroon and Gold fought off a surge from the Nittany Lions thanks to timely saves from Di Pasquo before Mooney broke through the defense and had his bid saved at the goal line. The Gophers found themselves out of position late in the frame where PSU moved up ice on a 3-on-1 only to have its one-timer slide off the end of an attacking stick and harmlessly into the corner as the home side protected the one-goal cushion. With the clock showing 2:19 to play in the second period, Minnesota was forced into penalty-kill mode where Di Pasquo and the entire unit wiped away the chance, taking the 1-0 lead back to the locker room through 40 minutes.
Within the first minute of the third period, the Gophers were tripped and earned their third crack at a 5-on-4 opportunity. The two minutes were negated, and the teams went back to skating at even strength. The game took a physical turn with tension mounting for both sides and scoring chances at each end. The Nittany Lions found the equalizer with 10:57 to play in regulation behind a strong forecheck that had Minnesota trapped in its defensive zone.
Mason Moe used his foot speed to break away from the entire PSU side and was taken down on his way to the net, generating another power play for the home team looking to break the deadlock. The man advantage was squandered but Minnesota stayed on the attack and used a strong surge to get looks from Tate Pritchard and Wyatt Cullen. As he did all night, Di Pasquo saved a scrambling Gophers team in the closing minutes of the period and denied an odd-man rush, sending the B1G opener into an extra session.
During the 3-on-3 overtime period, the puck almost never left the stick of a Minnesota player as the team registered all five shots on goal. Each chance was stopped and the game ended in a 1-1 tie. Mooney scored the lone shootout goal for the Gophers and Di Pasquo thought he saved the eventual winner but replay overturned the call, giving PSU the extra conference point.

Coach Larson's Comments
"A completely different style from the previous three teams we played, but man, I liked our game plan. I liked our start and I loved the way we played for probably the first 30 minutes of that game," Minnesota head coach Brett Larson said. "I thought we created so many chances and were playing so well. The team got frustrated that we weren't up two or three nothing, and I thought we started forcing some pucks, created some turnovers, gave them some odd mans because of it. And gave them some momentum back."
