Minnesota (8-10-0 overall, 3-2-0-0 Big Ten) also picked up a pair of assists from Vinni Lettieri while Leon Bristedt's assist moves the sophomore into a tie for the team lead with 17 points this season.
After a scoreless first period, Penn State (13-3-3, 3-0-0-0) struck twice early in the second period. Zach Saar scored his third goal of the year at 2:14 and Andrew Sturtz made it a two-goal lead with his ninth of the season at 6:59. Despite the two-goal deficit in the period, Minnesota matched its season-high for shots in a period with 18 during the second stanza.
While the Nittany Lions found the net twice in the second, it was the Gophers' turn in the third - other rather Gates'.
The freshman forward cut the deficit to one at 1:39 of the third period with his second goal of the year and then evened the contest at 10:12 with his second tally of the night. Lettieri assisted on both goals while Bristedt picked up the primary assist on the game-tying score. The two-goal performance marked Gates' first goal since the second game of the year.
After regulation ended without a victor, Penn State claimed its second-ever win against the Maroon & Gold when Vince Pedrie snuck in the game winner at 3:57 of overtime.
In net, Eric Schierhorn earned 36 saves - topping his previous best of 35 set last Saturday at the Mariucci Classic against nationally ranked Harvard.
The Gophers close out this weekend's Big Ten road series tomorrow afternoon against Penn State.
