Collins Invited to U.S. WJC Camp

MINNEAPOLIS (GopherSports.com) -Gopher Hockey sophomore defenseman Ryan Collins has been named to the preliminary roster for the 2016 U.S. National Junior Team and will attend training camp Dec. 14-18 at Boston University in Boston followed by an additional camp in Vierumaki, Finland, from Dec. 19-24.

The Bloomington, Minn., native is one of 29 players listed on the preliminary roster by USA Hockey with the final 23-man roster is expected to be named by Dec. 24. Team USA will compete in the 2016 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship, Dec.26-Jan.5, in Helsinki, Finland.

Gopher Hockey has been represented at 38 of 39 IIHF World Junior Championships since the inaugural event in 1977 including 23-straight tournaments since 1993.

A Columbus Blue Jackets prospect (selected 47th overall in the second round of the 2014 NHL Entry Draft), Collins has skated in 45 games at the University of Minnesota with 12 points (one goal, 11 assists). The defenseman has skated in all 13 games this season with three assists to his credit.

Collins previously competed at the 2015 IIHF World Junior Championship and helped Team USA win a gold medal at the 2014 IIHF Under-18 World Championships in Finland. He also earned bronze medals at the 2013 Five Nations Tournament and the 2013 Under-17 World Challenge. Collins, who played his junior hockey with the U.S. National Development Team Program in Ann Arbor, also played high school hockey at Benilde-St. Margaret's and helped the team win the 2012 MSHSL Class AA State Championship.
