MINNEAPOLIS (GopherSports.com) - Captain Kyle Rau scored twice and Jack Glover, Christian Isackson and Travis Boyd each added one of their own as the top-ranked Gopher Hockey program picked up a 5-0 win over the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology at Mariucci arena on Saturday night in exhibition action.
While four Gophers scored in the game, a trio of goaltenders combined for a 24-save shutout in net for Minnesota. Adam Wilcox picked up the win for the Maroon & Gold and made 12 saves in the first period while Ryan Coyne made five saves in the second followed by seven saves in the third from Nick Lehr.
In a game scheduled to shake the rust off for the returners and give the newcomers a taste of the Mariucci Arena atmosphere, the incoming Glover picked up the eventual game winner after going top shelf at 10:31 of the first period. The defenseman fired his wrist shot from the top of the circles with assists to both Justin Kloos and Mike Reilly.
Quickly after Glover's goal, the Gophers caught a break in the middle of the first as an Ook shot bounced off Adam Wilcox and slowly trickled into the net. However, the officials blew the play did before the puck crossed the goal line as the Gophers maintained their lead.
While the first period was a tight battle, the final 40 minutes were dominated by the Gophers with four goals from seniors including a second period that was bookended by a pair of goals from the captain.
The Maroon & Gold didn't wait long to add to the score in the second period, netting the second goal of the game just 55 seconds into play. Ryan Coyne, who came in to relieve Wilcox to start the period, hit Connor Reilly with a long pass into the neutral zone before Reilly found Hudson Fasching with a cross-ice pass heading into the offensive zone. The sophomore forward put his initial shot on the goalie and then recovered the puck and found Kyle Rau in front for an easy tap in.
Rau added his second of the game with just nine seconds left in the period when he redirected an attempt from Connor Reilly to put Minnesota up 3-0 heading into the third period.
Isackson made it 4-0 at 13:55 of the third period when made a nice play on the puck in front of the crease after being set up Robin Hoglund and Ryan Reilly while Boyd sealed the deal at 16:10 when he tapped in the puck with a pass from Seth Ambroz and Ryan Collins.
Minnesota outshot the Ooks 37-24 on the night.
Gopher Hockey kicks off the 2014-15 regular-season next weekend as the team looks to defend its Ice Breaker Tournament title. Notre Dame hosts the 2014 Ice Breaker Tournament at Compton Family Ice Arena in South Bend, Ind., with Minnesota, Minnesota Duluth and RPI joining the Irish in the tournament field. The Gophers take on the Bulldogs to open the event on Friday, Oct. 10 and will play either RPI or Notre Dame on Sunday, Oct. 12.
