DULUTH, Minn. – The No. 1 Minnesota women's hockey team rallied for a 3-3 overtime tie with Minnesota Duluth at AMSOIL Arena Saturday night. The Bulldogs earned an extra point in the league standings with a 2-1 shootout win.

Minnesota (3-0-1, 1-0-1-0 WCHA) tied the game late in the third period to send the game to overtime after the Bulldogs led 2-0 and 3-1. Junior Hannah Brandt (Vadnais Heights, Minn.) led the Gophers with two goals, and junior goaltender Amanda Leveille (Kingston, Ont.) made 25 saves.

Minnesota Duluth (1-3-2, 0-3-1-1 WCHA) was led by Michelle Lowenhielm, who had two points on one goal and one assist, and goaltender Kayla Black, who made 30 saves.

"Another tough game on the road here, and obviously the result isn't what we wanted," head coach Brad Frost said. "I'm proud of our kids for coming back after we were down by two goals in the third to tie it up and get a point out of it, but we played a good last two minutes of the second period and a good third period, and that's about it.

"Down two in the third, I thought our response was great, but it just took too long to get there. Being down a goal for the majority of the first and second periods isn't what we're looking to do. We have to show up and respond better after giving up a goal."

Minnesota Duluth took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission on a goal by Emma Stauber. Her shot from the left faceoff circle snuck past Leveille off the far post and into the net at 5:47 of the first period.

The Bulldogs extended their lead to 2-0 on a goal by Jenna McParland just 2:53 into the second period. Katerina Mrazova slid a pass across the top of the crease, and McParland beat Leveille stick-side.

Brandt then put the Gophers on the board with 17 seconds remaining in the second period. Sophomore Lee Stecklein (Roseville, Minn.) fired a shot from the left point, and Brandt tipped it past Black to trim UMD's lead to one at 2-1.

The Bulldogs regained the two-goal lead early in the third period when Lowenhielm converted on UMD's fourth power play of the game. However, Minnesota responded with two goals from senior Meghan Lorence (Mounds View, Minn.) and Brandt to tie the game at 3-3.

Lorence brought the Gophers within one, 3-2, with 11:33 to play. Sophomore Megan Wolfe (Eagan, Minn.) slid a pass across the slot to Lorence, who ripped a one-timer past Black stick-side.

Junior Milica McMillen (St. Paul, Minn.) then set up the game-tying goal, firing a shot from the point through traffic. Brandt tipped it past Black to tie the game at with 5:03 remaining.

The teams battled to a 3-3 tie in regulation and played a five-minute scoreless overtime period. The Gophers outshot the Bulldogs, 3-1, in overtime and 33-28 for the game.

UMD then secured an extra point in the WCHA standings with a 2-1 shootout win behind goals from Meghan Huertas and Katerina Mrazova. Leveille made two saves in the four-round shootout, and Brandt scored Minnesota's lone shootout goal.

Minnesota travels to Madison, Wis., to face No. 2 Wisconsin next weekend, Oct. 17-18. Game time is 7 p.m. CT Friday and 3 p.m. CT Saturday at LaBahn Arena.
