The Golden Gophers dropped a game to UMD 4-2 in Duluth tonight. Minnesota's second line was productive tonight, as Kelly Terry and Sarah Davis netted goals for the Gophers, but it wasn't enough to get the win against the Bulldogs.
The first period started fast and furious with both teams getting on the scoreboard within the first two minutes of play. Sophomore Kelly Terry got the Gophers an early lead, scoring just one minute into the game with assists from Rachael Bona and Sarah Davis. It didn't take UMD long to respond, as the Bulldogs tied it up just 33 seconds later. Jenna McPharland had the tying goal for the Bulldogs, assisted by Hayley Irwin. UMD took a 2-1 lead when Irwin got a goal at 10:18, assisted by Audrey Cournoyer. The Bulldogs extended their lead to 3-1 when Cournoyer found the net three minutes later, assisted by Irwin and Noora Jaakkola. The Gophers allowed three goals in a period for the first time since Wisconsin tallied a 3-0 lead in the first period in Madison on October 14. Minnesota outshot Minnesota Duluth in the opening period 12-11.
The Gophers brought the score back within one with a goal by sophomore Sarah Davis, assisted by Bethany Brausen. Time of the goal was 12 minutes, 54 seconds. Roughly five minutes later, UMD extended its lead back to two goals as McPharland got her second goal of the game to put the Bulldogs up 4-2. Irwin and Brigette Lacquette had assists on the goal. Despite outshooting the Bulldogs 16-9 in the second period, the Gophers went into the second intermission with a two-goal deficit.
Neither team scored in the final period tonight, despite the Gophers have two power play opportunities. Minnesota was outshot 7-4 in the third period.
Minnesota moved to 18-4-1 on the season and 12-4-1 in WCHA games. UMD improved to 12-8-1, and 9-7-1 in league play. For the first time this season, the Gophers lost after scoring the first goal of the game.
The same teams face off again tomorrow night at AMSOIL Arena at 7 p.m.
