Tenley Senden’s first-half strike lifted the University of Minnesota soccer team to a 1-0 shutout victory over No. 25 Iowa
ST. PAUL, Minn. . - Tenley Senden's first-half strike lifted the University of Minnesota soccer team (5-1-1, 1-0-0 Big Ten) to a 1-0 shutout victory over No. 25 Iowa (5-2-1, 0-1-0 Big Ten) to open conference play Thursday night in front of 764 fans at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium.
The victory marks Minnesota's first win over a top 25 opponent since defeating No. 14 South Carolina 2-1 on Nov. 22, 2024, to advance to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Tournament.
Senden delivered the decisive goal in the 41st minute, capitalizing on an unassisted opportunity to net her second goal of the season and hand the Golden Gophers a 1-0 advantage before halftime. Goalkeeper Sarah Martin stood tall between the posts, stopping all six shots on goal to record her third clean sheet of the campaign and seal Minnesota's fifth win of the year.
The Gophers generated early chances in the opening period. Forward Ava Westlund saw back-to-back shots blocked in the 17th minute, while defender Hannah Heinlein and forward Caroline Birdsell continually tested the Iowa backline.
The pressure paid off at the 40:46 mark when Senden, entering off the bench, found space and buried her strike into the net.
Iowa pushed aggressively for an equalizer in the second half, outshooting the Gophers 14-3 over the final 45 minutes and earning eight corner kicks.
However, Minnesota's defensive unit held firm. Martin came through with four key saves after the break, denying dangerous efforts from Iowa's Sofia Bush, Berit Parten, Sara Batchadji and Kylie Cino. Full 90-minute defensive shifts from Keegan Schmeiser, Selah Koleth, Taylor Heimerl and Matigann Vixayvong preserved the clean sheet.
The Gophers hit the road this weekend to face Penn State on Sunday. Kickoff is scheduled for noon CT and will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
