Minnesota qualified two relay teams and student-athletes in four other individual events.
MINNEAPOLIS – The No. 11 University of Minnesota men's track and field team has qualified 13 student-athletes across six different events to the 2026 NCAA Outdoor Championships in June at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. The Maroon and Gold qualified by finishing in the top 12 of their respective events at the NCAA West Regional at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Ark., at John McDonnell Field on May 27 and May 29.
The 13 student-athletes for the Golden Gophers are the most for the men's program in over 25 years. In 2003 and in 2025 Minnesota had 10 men earn bids to the NCAA Championships - which is the second-most qualifiers since at least 2000.
For the first time in school history Minnesota earned three tickets to the NCAA Championships in the men's hammer throw on Wednesday. Angelos Mantzouranis, Anthony Barmes and Pavlos Tzamtzis earned spots by finishing second, fourth and 12th among the 48 hammer throwers in the West region. Mantzouranis sent a clutch final-round throw of 74.37m (244-0) to qualify for this third straight NCAA Championships. Barmes, a first-year Gopher, already had his fourth career ticket booked to NCAAs in the hammer throw before he sent his furthest mark of 71.30m (233-11) on the final throw of the competition to move from seventh to fourth overall. Tzamtzis, a sophomore from Greece, earned his first career NCAAs ticket out of the third flight of the four-flight competition. At the end of the third flight Tzamtzis was in second overall with his third-round 65.32m (214-4) but saw his mark move down the leaderboard throughout the fourth and final flight but held on to the 12th and final qualifying spot to Eugene.
Three-time Big Ten long jump champion Charles Godfred punched his third consecutive trip to the NCAA Outdoor Championships on Wednesday. The Nigerian only needed to use two of his three attempts for the second straight year to qualify with his 7.87m (25-10) earning him the spot. Godfred's wind-legal leap in Fayetteville (+1.4 m/s) had an identical wind reading from his qualifying mark (8.10m | 26-7) from the 2025 NCAA West Regional in Bryan-College Station.
The first event on the track to qualify for a trip to Hayward Field was the men's 4x100m relay team of Zion Campbell, Wanyae Belle, Aaron Charles and Charles Godfred. The quartet clocked a heat one winning time of 38.71 to finish second overall at John McDonnell Field. The qualification for the 4x100m relay team is the third time in the last four years the Maroon and Gold have qualified for outdoor NCAAs in the event. In the only other two appearances for Minnesota's men's 4x100m relays have finished seventh (38.88, 2025) and 10th (38.70, 2023).
For the first time since 2023 the Maroon and Gold men earned a NCAA semifinals bid in the 3000m steeplechase. On Friday night Emmett Gerres ran to a fourth-place finish in a time of 8:35.69 in the opening heat of three. Without an automatic qualifying finish, Gerres was still able to qualify as one of the 'next three best times' among the finishers and ended with a ninth-place finish overall in Fayetteville. The time of 8:35.69 for Gerres was the second-fastest of the redshirt sophomore's career and earned him his first bid to the NCAA Championships after finishing 32nd at the same event in 2025.
After joining the program in January of 2026, John Caleb captured a bid to the NCAA Championships 100m as a true freshman in May. With a third-place finish in his 100m quarterfinal heat, Caleb earned his ticket to Hayward Field with a time of 10.18 (-0.1 m/s). Minnesota's school-record holder is the first Gopher to qualify for the NCAA semifinals since 2023 (Kion Benjamin).
At the 200m distance the Maroon and Gold earned a pair of tickets to the NCAA Championships in Eugene when Wanyae Belle and Aaron Charles earned sixth and seventh-place positions on Friday night. Both Belle and Charles came out of heat two of three in the quarterfinal round with Belle's 20.44 (+0.4 m/s) grabbing an automatic qualifying spot with Charles' 20.45 (+0.4 m/s) earning the top time qualifying position. In the process Belle and Charles became the first Gopher teammates to both qualify for the NCAA Championships 200m semifinal in the same season.
Minnesota's 4x400m relay capped off the men's portion of the 2026 West Regional in dramatic fashion with the team's first bid in the event since 2016. The team of Dwyne Smith Jr., Max McQuide, Jayden Green and Ramy Ayoub clocked a time of 3:04.25 for the fifth-fastest in program history and the best time since 2004 (3:03.35). The time earned Minnesota third place in section three, good enough for an automatic qualifying bid to the NCAA Championships at Hayward Field. Overall the team's time of 3:04.25 finished 11th overall at John McDonnell Field. Green's third leg split of 45.25 was the highlight of the race for the Maroon and Gold and anchored the team that are all first-time NCAA Championships qualifiers.
