No. 13 'U' Advances to Nationals for First Time Since 2022

The Gophers are heading back to Fort Worth

CORVALLIS, Ore. -- The No. 13 Minnesota gymnastics team placed second at the NCAA Regional Finals on Sunday night with a score of 197.625, punching their ticket to nationals for the seventh time in program history.

The Gophers score trailed UCLA (197.725) but defeated No. 12 Utah (197.500) and No. 5 Alabama (197.175). Minnesota is heading back to nationals for the first time since the 2022 season, when they finished sixth, a program-best. The Gophers ended Utah's streak as the GymRocks had been to nationals 49 straight times before this year.



"I'm so proud of this team," said head coach Jenny Hansen. "Our team came in confident and excited for this opportunity. They had tremendous belief when they walked in the building that we could do something really special tonight."

The Gophers earned scores of 49.375 on vault, 49.275 on bars, 49.525 on beam and 49.450 on floor.

Event winners on the night were Minnesota's Arianna Ostrum, Utah's Makenns Smith and UCLA's Jordan Chiles on vault (9.950). Utah's Avery Neff and Minnesota's Jordyn Lyden won on bars (9.950) and Lyden (9.950) won on beam. UCLA's Jordan Chiles won on floor (10.000).

Lyden, a Stillwater, Minnesota native, talked about what it means to her to be able to represent her home state at nationals.

"It's so awesome, I can't even put it into words," Lyden said. "To have my family watching and always there is amazing. Growing up coming to meets and getting to come to school as a Minnesota-made kid is so awesome. It's something everybody wants. I've never felt this feeling before."

Jordan Chiles won the all-around with a 39.750 score while Arianna Ostrum took third (39.550).

"I knew this team could do it and to see it all pay off is so incredible," said Gophers freshman Arianna Ostrum. "I'm so excited, I can't wait to go to nationals. It's a great representation of the  Gophers gymnastics team and I can't wait to see where we go from here."

The Gophers will be joined at nationals by No. 1 Oklahoma, No. 2 LSU, No. 3 Florida, No. 4 UCLA, No. 6 Stanford, No. 7 Georgia and No. 9 Arkansas.

EVENT BREAKDOWN:

FLOOR
The 'U' started off the meet with a stellar 49.450 floor score. Arianna Ostrum led the way with a 9.950 while Jordyn Lyden (9.925) and Sophie Swartzmiller (9.900) also posted 9.900s-or-higher. Lacie Saltzmann led off the group with a 9.875 while Brooklyn Rowray rounded out the group at 9.800. After one rotation, Minnesota led 49.450 to 49.350 (UCLA) and 49.325 (Alabama and Utah).

VAULT
The Gophers posted a 49.375 team score on vault. Ava Stewart led off with a 9.850 and Sarah Moraw followed up with a 9.875. Teryn Crump then tied her career-high with a 9.900 to put the Gophers in high-scoring position. Gianna Gerdes went 9.825 and Arianna Ostrum closed out the rotation with a 9.950. After two rotations, Minnesota led UCLA (98.750), Alabama (98.675) and Utah (98.625).

BARS
Minnesota earned a team score of 49.275 on bars. Gianna Gerdes started with a 9.800 before Teryn Crump and Arianna Ostrum both went 9.775. Lacie Saltzmann and Emma Slevin each earned 9.875s before Jordyn Lyden closed it out with a 9.950. After three rotations,  Utah (148.150) led and Minnesota (148.100) was tied with UCLA. Alabama was in fourth at 147.800.

BEAM
With its season on the line, Minnesota earned a 49.525 beam score. Arianna Ostrum started out the meet with a 9.875 before Ava Stewart earned a 9.900. Sarah Moraw posted a 9.875 before Brooklyn Rowray tied her season-high with a 9.925. Emma Slevin earned a 9.875 on her beam debut before Jordyn Lyden closed it out with a 9.950, sealing the second place finish for Minnesota.

NOTABLE:
-Minnesota is heading back to nationals for the seventh time and fourth under head coach Jenny Hansen.
-Jordyn Lyden posted her sixth 9.900-or-better on the floor this season.
-Teryn Crump tied her career-best with a 9.900 on vault.
-Jordyn Lyden hit a 9.950 on bars, tying her season-high and seventh 9.900-or-higher score on the event this year.
-Lyden tied a career-best 9.950 on beam to end the meet. It was her fifth 9.900-or-higher on beam this year.
-Ostrum hit a 9.950 on vault, her fifth 9.900-or-better on the event this year.
-Ostrum earned her seventh 9.900-or-better on the floor.
-Ostrum's 39.550 all-around score was her second best all-around score of the year (39.675).
-Lacie Saltzmann tied her career-high on floor with a 9.875.
-Brooklyn Rowray tied her season-best with a 9.925 on balance beam.
-Jordyn Lyden won event titles on both bars and beam.
