University of Minnesota men's basketball coach Niko Medved has announced that Kyan Evans (Kansas City, Mo.) will join the Golden Gopher program in June. Evans joins the Gophers after spending his junior year at North Carolina and first two seasons at Colorado State.
"Kyan is such a competitor with a high basketball IQ and a great playmaker," Medved said. "With his experience as a high-level player, Kyan has made a lot of big shots throughout his career. I have seen first-hand what he can do, and he knows the standards and expectations from the get-go. I can't wait to bring that energy to Minnesota."
Evans, a 6-foot, 2-inch guard, reconnects with Medved after playing two seasons together at Colorado State from 2023-25, where he scored 441 points, 79 three-pointers in 72 games. He also established 139 assists and 39 steals during his Ram tenure. As a CSU sophomore, Evans was an honorable mention All-Mountain West when he averaged 10.6 points and 3.1 assists, while scoring 70 three-pointers. As a sophomore, he led the team in threes and three-point percentage at 44.6 percent. He scored double figures 23 times, including 23 points in the NCAA first round win over Memphis. His sophomore numbers improved on his freshman-year averages of 1.7 points and 0.8 assists in 8.1 minutes per game.
Following his CSU tenure, Evans spent his junior year at North Carolina, where he played in all 33 games and started in 17. He averaged 4.0 points and 17.7 minutes as a Tar Heel. He also established 82 assists, which ranked second on the team, while his 32 three-pointers ranked fifth. He established five or more assists six times and a season-high 15 points vs. Central Arkansas.
In high school, Evans was the 2023 Missouri Gatorade Player of the Year, a three-time all-state selection, and a two-time all-conference player at Staley High School, where he averaged 12.4 points and 5.7 assists his senior year. Evans was also the Kansas City Metro Player of the Year in 2022.
