Medved Signs Contract Extension Through 2032 Season

The University of Minnesota has extended head men's basketball coach Niko Medved's contract through the 2032 season. His extension was approved by the Board of Regents at the July meeting. Medved is entering his second season as the Golden Gopher head coach and 14th year overall as a head coach.
In his first year with the Gophers, Medved constructed a roster of just two returners and 13 newcomers and guided the Gophers to a 15-18 record. Minnesota was 8-12 in the Big Ten and finished 11th in the league, despite being riddled with injuries. Of those eight wins, three came against ranked opponents. Minnesota returned to postseason competition in its first season under Medved, as it competed in the College Basketball Crown in Las Vegas. Cade Tyson led Minnesota in scoring with an average of 19.6 points per game and was named All-Big Ten honorable mention and NABC all-district.
In the classroom, Isaac Asuma, Grayson Grove and RJ Spencer were named Academic All-Big Ten, and Grove and Tyson also received CSC Academic All-District honors. As a team, the National Association of Basketball Coaches also recognized the Gophers with a Team Academic Excellence Award, which is given to programs with a team GPA of 3.0 or higher during the 2025-26 season.
Under Medved, Minnesota launched "Ski-U-Mah Strong," last year. This initiative is in conjunction with M Health Fairview Masonic Children's Hospital and honors and recognizes current and former patients. These individuals - known as warriors in the program - are paired with a student-athlete and are recognized during a game. During this game, the warrior names are on the back of the team's jerseys to symbolize the greater importance of the work and champion their perseverance.
Medved, who earned a bachelor's and master's degree from Minnesota, returned to his alma mater after serving as the head coach at Colorado State for seven years. Medved guided Colorado State to the NCAA tournament three times in his final four years. Medved led Colorado State to a 2025 Mountain West tournament championship and the Rams advanced to the Round of 32 of the NCAA tournament after beating Memphis in the First Round.
Medved was at Drake in 2017-18 and led the Bulldogs to a 17-17 record and a 10-8 mark in the Missouri Valley Conference. That record placed the Bulldogs third in the league and was a five-game improvement from the previous year.

He led Furman to the 2017 Southern Conference regular season championship and was named Southern Conference Coach of the Year. After taking over a seven-win team, Furman improved each year under Medved with nine, 11, 19 and 23-win seasons, and played in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament in 2016 and 2017.
