Gophers Take Down Wildcats 7-3, Secure Series Win Over Northwestern

4/25/2026 6:56:00 PM | Baseball

MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. – The University of Minnesota baseball team continued their weekend series against Northwestern University this afternoon, securing the series win in game two with a 7-3 victory over the Wildcats at Siebert Field.

Brandon Jaenke picked up the victory out of the bullpen for Minnesota. The right-hander went 1.2 innings, giving up one run on two hits. Marcus Kruzan also made an impact on the mound for the Golden Gophers, starting the ballgame and throwing six shutout innings with five strikeouts.

Cole went 2-for-3 at the plate, supplementing his two home runs with two RBIs. Jack Bello added to the power-hitting performance by going 2 for 3 with two doubles. Weber Neels also helped out for the Golden Gophers, going 1-for-4 with an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Gophers put runs on the scoreboard first, starting the scoring in the third inning on a leadoff home run from Ethan Cole.

The Wildcats failed to push any runs across before the Gophers built on their lead in the sixth inning. Bello came across to score the lone run of the inning for Minnesota on a wild pitch, bringing the score to 2-0 in favor of the Gophers.

Minnesota's lead had evaporated once the eighth inning arrived and turned into a 3-2 Northwestern advantage, when the Gophers re-gained control at 7-3.

The Gophers bats heated up in the inning to score five runs. Ethan Cole started things off with his second home run of the evening, followed up by a sacrifice fly from Jack Spanier. Weber Neels added an RBI single to the tally before the Gophers would add to more runs on a passed ball and a wild pitch.

The score remained 7-3 for the rest of the game, as Minnesota coasted to the victory and secured the series win heading into Sunday.
