Gophers Descend Upon Las Vegas for U.S. Open Events

MINNEAPOLIS – Minnesota wrestling will be well represented at the 2026 U.S. Open Events as 12 Gophers are heading to Las Vegas this weekend. The event takes place April 22-26 at The Expo at World Market Center Las Vegas and will be streamed on FloWrestling (subscription required).

The competition gets underway for the Minnesota contingent on Thursday with Greco-Roman. Incoming freshman Joel Friederichs (55 kg) competes on the U20 side at 12 p.m. CT with prelims, quarterfinals, semifinals and consolations. The final U20 session starts at 6 p.m. with more consolations, consolation semifinals and medal matches, while the best-of-three finals begins at 7 p.m.

Former Gopher Michial Foy earned the No. 1 pre-seed at 97 kg as he competes on the senior circuit of Greco-Roman, starting Friday at 12 p.m. That's when prelims, quarterfinals and consolation matches will take place. Semifinals and consolations begin at 6 p.m., while medal matches and the opening round of the best-of-three finals are slated for Saturday at 12 p.m. Round two of the finals, and round three if needed, would take place at 8 p.m. Saturday night. 

Four current Gophers are scheduled to compete in Senior Freestyle: redshirt sophomore Ethan Riddle (79 kg), and redshirt freshmen Jed Wester (79 kg), Silas Dailey (92 kg) and Koy Hopke (125 kg). Hopke earned the No. 9 pre-seed at his weight, while Riddle was No. 10 at his.

Action for those five starts Friday with prelims, quarterfinals and consolations beginning at 12 p.m. Semifinals and consolations take place Friday night starting at 6 p.m., while action picks back up Saturday at 12 p.m. with consolation semifinals and medal matches. Senior Freestyle concludes Saturday night with the championship finals at 8 p.m.

Seven more Gophers are competing in U20 Freestyle: redshirt freshmen Wyatt Duchateau (65 kg) and Dawson Johnson (65 kg), true freshman Charles Vanier (70 kg), and incoming freshmen Joel Friederichs (57 kg), Titan Friederichs (57 kg), Tyler Dekraker (65 kg) and John Murphy (86 kg).

Those seven start their prelims Saturday at 12 p.m. CT, followed by championship rounds and consolation matches at 6 p.m. that night. Sunday features quarterfinals and semifinals starting at 12 p.m. with championship bouts and medal matches set for 4 p.m.
