nabwe at the 2025 big ten outdoor championships with her medal

Nabwe, Caleb Set Records at Tom Jones Memorial

4/19/2026 7:06:00 AM | Men's Track & Field, Women's Track & Field

Nabwe is now No. 2 all-time in NCAA history in the hammer throw.

MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Minnesota saw 14 different program top 10 performances go down at the Tom Jones Memorial and the Bryan Clay Invitational over the weekend. Both Anthonett Nabwe and John Caleb secured school records in Gainesville, Fla., at James G. Pressly Stadium at Percy Beard Track.

Nabwe continued her historic 2025-26 campaign with her fifth-attempt 75.72m (248-5) in the women's hammer throw to win the competition over teammate Hadley Streit's 71.98m (236-2). Nabwe, a 'The Bowerman' Watch List member, is now No. 2 all-time in the hammer throw in NCAA history and set a new African record in the process. The nearly 15-foot lifetime best for Nabwe is the best hammer throw by an NCAA student-athlete since Camryn Rogers of Cal threw a collegiate record of 77.67m (254-10) in 2022.

"I was shaking when I threw it," Nabwe said after the competition. "Just processing the whole situation is just so crazy to me. I didn't think that one day I was going to be here because I started hammer freshman year of college. So just being here right now is just awesome and I am grateful."

Until two weeks ago, no woman had thrown 70 meters or further in the hammer throw but after the Tom Jones Memorial the Gophers now have four throws beyond 70 meters. Streit's sixth-attempt hammer throw mark of 71.98m (236-2) and her fourth-attempt 70.85m (232-5) put her at No. 2 in Big Ten history behind Nabwe and is now No. 2 in the NCAA in 2026. All-time Minnesota now owns No. 1, No. 2, No. 5 and No. 6 all-time Big Ten hammer throws, which have all been coached by Associate Head Coach Peter Miller

On the track the Maroon and Gold saw a two-year-old 100m school record go down when true freshman John Caleb registered a wind-legal 10.00 (+2.0 m/s). The performance broke 2024 Olympian Devin Augustine's 10.02 record and makes Caleb one of the fastest in Big Ten history, with the conference all-time record sitting at 9.94. The program record run gives men's sprints coach Ibrahim Kabia his third different 100m school record holders since 2022 (Kion Benjamin, Devin Augustine and John Caleb). Nationally Caleb's 10.00 in the 100m ranks him seventh nationally and first among freshman in the NCAA.

Between the Bryan Clay Invite and the Tom Jones Memorial there were five different Gopher performances that are now No. 2 all-time in Minnesota track and field history. Zoie Dundon is now No. 2 all-time in both the 800m and 1500m outdoors for the Maroon and Gold. Dundon's weekend in Azusa, Calif., kicked off with a 2:02.31 for the fastest half-mile time at Minnesota since NCAA champion Heather Dorniden's 2:01.05 in 2007. Dundon followed that with a 4:13.50 in the 1500m late Saturday night to move from No. 8 all-time to No. 2 at the 'U'. The 1500m time was just 0.05 seconds off the school record held by Gabriele Anderson from 2010. Within the Big Ten this season Dundon is ranked No. 4 in the 800m and No. 7 in the 1500m.

Both Ramy Ayoub and Ali Weimer also put forth the second-best performance in their respective events. Weimer's 5000m performance of 15:31.13 on Friday night at the Bryan Clay Invitational improved on her No. 2 spot all-time at Minnesota. Weimer, the Minnesota 10000m school record holder, dropped 19 seconds off of her previous 5K lifetime best and pulled her less than a second off of Bethany Hasz's program record of 15:30.57 that was set in 2021. In Gainesville on Saturday Ayoub raced out to an early lead in the 800m before stopping the clock at 1:46.62. The half-mile time for Ayoub makes him No. 2 all-time at the 'U' and is the fastest since Harun Abda's school record of 1:46.38 in 2013. In the conference this year Weimer is now No. 1 in the 5000m and Ayoub is seventh.

Charles Godfred celebrated his birthday with an impressive weekend on the track and on the long jump runway. The two-time outdoor long jump champion put forth a season-best 8.08m (26-6 1/4) to move to No. 1 in the Big Ten and one of the tops in the NCAA this year. On the track Godfred's 10.14 (+2.7 m/s) time in the 100m improved on his No. 4 all-time spot in school history and was a lifetime best (Minnesota's school records allow up to +3.0 m/s wind). In addition, Zion Campbell raced to a lifetime best 10.25 (+2.2 m/s) to improve on his No. 6 all-time spot at Minnesota.

Both Nontokozo Ncube and Izzy Roemer posted the third-best times in their respective events over the weekend. Ncube's 52.08 in the 400m came first in Gainesville, with the Zimbabwe native going from No. 5 at Minnesota to No. 3 all-time. The 52.08 for Ncube is the fastest by a Gopher woman since Titania Markland (51.40) and Emerald Egwim (51.82) in 2018. In the 5000m Roemer became No. 3 all-time in Dinkytown with her 15:51.31. In the process Roemer became just the fourth Gopher to break the 16-minute mark in the 5000m, joining Weimer, Bethany Hasz and Megan Hasz.

In the 400m hurdles Kennedy Martinson became the fifth-fastest Gopher all-time with a 57.66 in her second career appearance in the event. Anthony Barmes won the men's hammer throw with a lifetime best 72.66m (238-5) and added four centimeters to his No. 4 all-time spot at Minnesota. The women's 4x400m relay of Zeal Kuku, Martinson, Kitania Headley and Ncube clocked a 3:35.90 to move to No. 9 all-time in school history. Lastly, Minnesota's men's 4x100m relay of Campbell, Caleb, Aaron Charles and Wanyae Belle finished in a time of 38.82. The season debut in the 4x100m relay for Campbell now gives Minnesota four different 4x100m teams since 2022 to run 38.82, or faster.

Next for Minnesota is the team's lone outdoor track and field at home, the Gary Wilson Invitational on April 22. Additionally - the 'U' will send competitors to the 116th Drake Relays from April 23-25.
