Gophers Top Northwestern On Senior Night

3/7/2026 11:06:00 PM | Men's Basketball

Langston Reynolds scored 17 of his team-high 21 points in the second half, Cade Tyson had 15 points, and Isaac Asuma finished with 14 points and eight rebounds, as Minnesota (15-16, 8-12 Big Ten) fought off a furious second-half rally by Nick Martinelli and Northwestern (13-18, 5-15 Big Ten) to close the regular season with a 67-66 win and a 13-4 record at Williams Arena.

Minnesota led by as many as 16 points in the first half, and had a 58-48 lead with 9:22 remaining, but Martinelli scored 11 points during a 16-5 run to give Northwestern a one-point lead with 1:34 remaining. The Wildcats led by three points with 0:34 remaining, but Reynolds scored the final four points of the game to help Minnesota sweep the season series against NU. Minnesota defeated the Wildcats, 84-78, on Jan. 3 in Evanston.

Reynolds was 9-of-13 from the field and 3-of-4 at the free throw line, and he added four assists and three rebounds to his 21 points. It's his third game this season with 20-plus points, and he's scored 21 points in two of the past three games, having also done so in the 78-73 win over UCLA. He was 7-of-9 in the second half, scoring the first nine points after the break, and then securing the win with those final four points in the final 30 seconds.

Tyson's 15-point outing was his 30th game in double-figures this season. He ends the regular season with 585 points, an average of 19.5 points per game. That average currently stands as the highest for a Gophers player since Daniel Oturu averaged 20.1 points in 2019-20, and Tyson's current point total ranks 12th all-time at Minnesota.

Asuma made 4-of-7 field goals, including 2-of-3 from behind the arc, and 4-of-4 free throws. His eight rebounds led the team, and he added four assists. It's Asuma's 11th-straight game scoring in double-figures. Bobby Durkin was 4-of-8 from three-point range to finish with 12 points, and Grayson Grove led the team with six assists and three steals, while adding three points and two boards. Kai Shinholster added two points and two rebounds for the Gophers.

Minnesota made 24-of-44 (.545) field goals, including 6-of-17 (.353) from three-point range, and 13-of-16 (.813) free throws. Martinelli paced the Wildcats with a game-high 23 points and nine rebounds. He scored 13 points in the second half. Jake West finished with 14 points, including four three-pointers, Tre Singleton had 10 points and six boards, and Angelo Ciaravino added seven points and six rebounds. The Wildcats made 23-of-53 (.434) field goals, including 8-of-23 (.348) three-pointers, and 12-of-14 (.857) foul shots, while holding a slim 28-26 rebounding edge.

Minnesota jumped out to an 11-2 lead. Tyson opened the scoring with a turnaround jumper, and Grove scored on a layup. Martinelli cut it to 4-2 with a layup, but Asuma answered with a personal 7-0 run, making a three-pointer and a pair of layups to force an NU timeout with 16:38 left. Durkin extended the lead to 14-2 with a three-pointer, as the Gophers started 6-of-6 from the field, and Tyson and Asuma each made a pair of free throws to make it a 15-0 run and an 18-2 lead with 13:38 remaining. The Wildcats ended a five-minute scoring drought with a three to trim the Gophers' advantage to 13 points, but Shinholster drove for a layup and a 20-5 lead. After a second NU three-pointer, Reynolds drove hard to the rim and threw down a dunk to make it 22-8 with 11:01 left.

Martinelli scored four points during a 6-0 NU run, as the Wildcats pulled within 22-14, but Durkin's second trey of the night put the Gophers up 25-14 at the 8:00 mark. Tyson scored in the lane to stretch the lead to 13 points, and an NU three pulled the Wildcats back within 10, but a Grove free throw, Durkin's third triple, and a Reynolds layup made it 33-17 with 4:42 remaining. A 12-4 Wildcats run trimmed Minnesota's lead to 37-29 with 39.1 seconds left, but Asuma made a pair of free throws to take a 10-point lead to the locker room.

Asuma had halftime totals of 11 points, three rebounds, and three assists, while Tyson had 10 points, and Durkin added nine points. As a team, the Gophers were red-hot, making 13-of-20 (.650) field goals, including 4-of-7 (.571) treys, and 9-of-10 free throws. Martinelli led the Wildcats with 10 points and six rebounds at the break, while Ciaravino and West each added five points. NU made 10-of-27 (.370) field goals, including 3-of-11 (.273) three-pointers, and 6-of-6 free throws, while holding a 14-10 edge in rebounds.

The Gophers opened the second half with a 7-3 run, with Reynolds scoring all seven points to extend the lead to 46-32. The Wildcats pulled within 12, but another Reynolds layup made it 48-34 and NU called a timeout with 16:54 remaining, West's second three-pointer of the second half keyed a 5-0 NU run, pulling the Wildcats within nine points at 48-39 with 16:00 left. NU cut the lead to 48-41, but Asuma drained a three-pointer with 15:07 left to make it 51-41. The Wildcats added a pair of free throws, giving them a 9-3 run to pull within eight, but Reynolds layup with 14:00 remaining put the Gophers up 53-43.

Another three-pointer from West had NU within 55-48, but Durkin connected on his fourth trifecta of the game to once again extend Minnesota's lead to 10 points with 9:22 remaining. Martinelli converted a three-point play and Singleton dunked to trim the margin to five points for the first time since Minnesota led 7-2, but Tyson's three-point play with 5:29 left gave the Gophers some breathing room at 61-53. Martinelli added a three-pointer and a layup, cutting Minnesota's lead to three points with 4:00 remaining, and then he added a free throw to pull the Wildcats within 61-59.

Reynolds made a pair of free throws with 3:01 left to put Minnesota up by four, but Martinelli made a layup and Jordan Clayton's second three-pointer with 1:34 remaining made it an11-2 run and gave Northwestern its first lead of the game. Two free throws by Ciaravino put NU up 66-63 with 0:34 remaining, but Reynolds drove for a dunk with 26 seconds left. After Martinelli missed the front end of a one-and-one with 0:19 remaining, Reynolds added a layup for a 67-66 lead, and Niko Medved called timeout with 11.3 seconds left to set his defense. NU dribbled the ball across mid court and called a timeout. They got the ball to Martinelli for a three-point attempt that bounced high off the rim and fell off, and Minnesota was able to prevent a last-second shot to find the net.
