Gopher Arms Combine for Shutout in 10-0 Victory Over UNLV

MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. – The University of Minnesota baseball team played their first game of the 2026 Cambria College Classic tonight, with Cole Selvig and Joe Sperry combining to throw a shutout as the Gophers blanked UNLV Rebels 10-0 at U.S. Bank Stadium.

 

Selvig started and picked up the win for Minnesota, going five shutout innings and striking out seven. Sperry was dealing out of the bullpen as well, going two shutout innings and striking out two.

 

In the batter's box, the Gophers were led by Ty Allen, who went 1-for-4 on the day with a three run home run and three RBIs. Jack Spanier furnished a standout effort as well, going 2-for-4 with a double, a walk and three RBIs. Weber Neels also chipped in, putting together one hit in two trips to the plate while adding a double, a walk and two RBIs.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

 

The Gophers got on the board early, scoring in the first inning on an RBI double off the bat of Weber Neels to drive Jack Spanier across the plate.

 

They continued their scoring in the second with two more runs on an RBI single from Michael Lippe and a sacrifice fly from Jack Bello.

 

The Gophers had their biggest offensive output in the third when they scored five times, highlighted by a three-run home run off the bat of Ty Allen and a two RBI double from Spanier.

 

A sacrifice fly from Neels in the sixth and a bases loaded walk in the seventh sealed the deal for the Gophers, closing out the game 10-0 in the seventh on the ten run mercy rule.

» Selvig and Sperry combined to throw a four-hit shutout.
» Selvig struck out seven Rebels hitters.
» Every Minnesota starter reached base safely in the win.
