Holtz coached Minnesota from 1984-85 and posted 10 wins

Former University of Minnesota head football coach Lou Holtz has passed away. Holtz's death was announced by his family. He was 89.

Holtz led the Gophers for two seasons from 1984-85 and was 10-12 overall and 7-10 in the Big Ten. 

He came to Minnesota from Arkansas and took over a Gopher program that won one game in 1983. Minnesota won four games in 1984 and posted three conference wins. 

In 1985, Holtz led the Gophers to a 6-5 record and a 4-4 mark in the Big Ten and a berth in the Independence Bowl against Clemson. It was Minnesota's first bowl game since 1977. Holtz would depart Minnesota for Notre Dame prior to the Independence Bowl, which Minnesota won 20-13. 



Holtz also served as the head coach at William & Mary, NC State, Arkansas, Notre Dame and South Carolina during a coaching career that spanned more than 40 years. He also coached the New York Jets during the 1976 NFL season.  

Holtz went into broadcasting after his coaching career, and he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2008
