Gophers Drop Game One to Illini 2-1 in Extra Innings

URBANA, ILL. – The University of Minnesota baseball team hit the road for their first Big Ten Conference matchup of the 2026 season against the University of Illinois tonight, falling in extra innings 2-1 at Illinois Field.
Joe Sperry came out of the bullpen for Minnesota and was credited with the loss, tossing three innings and striking out two. Cole Selvig was a bright spot for the Gophers, starting the ballgame and throwing 6.1 innings with three strikeouts.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Gophers got on the scoreboard first in the ball game, tallying the first run in the fourth inning on a leadoff solo home run over the right center field wall from Easton Richter.
The Illini tied the score back up in the fifth, driving in a run on a sacrifice bunt to the right side of the infield. The score remained tied 1-1 till the end of regulation, sending the game into extra innings.
The Illini were the first to score in extra innings, driving in a run in the bottom of the tenth on a bases loaded single to end the game.
