Ziemer, Lamb net power-play goals
MINNEAPOLIS - The University of Minnesota men's hockey team scored twice on the power play in a 6-2 loss versus Ohio State in the Big Ten Conference series opener Friday night from 3M Arena at Mariucci.
The Golden Gophers (10-17-1 overall, 6-11-0 B1G, 20 points) got an early lead thanks to Brodie Ziemer's first-frame goal on the man advantage. The Buckeyes (9-15-1 overall, 5-10-0 B1G, 16 points) responded by scoring four times in a span of nine minutes between the end of the first period and the start of the second for their fourth-ever win inside 3M Arena at Mariucci.
The series opened with neither side able to sustain any zone time as pucks were broken out easily at each end. The Maroon and Gold finally created a forecheck that led to Jimmy Clark being alone at the doorstep where his shot slid through the crease as the game went nearly four minutes without a whistle. At 11:58, the visitors were called for having too many players on the ice, giving Minnesota's potent power play its first opportunity.
Ziemer wasted no time burying his NCAA-leading 11th goal on the man advantage as the sophomore caught the OSU netminder cheating at the near post and found space for the 1-0 edge with 7:17 to play in the first period. The Gophers delivered a penalty kill in the closing minutes, but a net-front scramble allowed the Buckeyes to pull even, 1-1, in the final 30 seconds of the opening frame.
Less than two minutes into the middle stanza, OSU capitalized on a defensive turnover by the home side and tapped home the go-ahead goal at the back post for a 2-1 advantage. Another giveaway behind the Minnesota net allowed the visitors a clear shot from the slot and built a two-goal cushion at the 6:33 mark before stretching the lead to 4-1 just three minutes later. The Gophers switched goaltenders as Nathan Airey took over for his first appearance since January 10.
Desperate to change the game flow, the Maroon and Gold used a physical edge to start offensive pressure, leading to its second man advantage with 6:58 left in the period. This time it took just 14 seconds for Brody Lamb to rip home a wrister from the right circle, giving the home crowd life again. Airey was called upon in the final minute to shut down an OSU odd-man rush but the Gophers' deficit remained 4-2 through 40 minutes.
The Buckeyes won an offensive-zone faceoff and scored on a deflection 67 seconds after the puck was dropped for the final frame, extending their lead to 5-2. Teddy Townsend had the best shot at closing the gap, but he was stopped twice from the edge of the crease in the middle of the period. OSU tacked on a power-play tally with 11:23 to play in regulation before closing the night, 6-2.

Coach Motzko's Comments
"Well, for what we did a week ago, we were the exact opposite tonight, from start to finish. A complete reversal in our play; and you all saw it," Minnesota head coach Bob Motzko said. "The biggest thing is we have to respond tomorrow. That's the one thing; we have an opportunity tomorrow to respond, and that's the whole thing."
